Deadpool 3 is in the works and just waiting to be rubber-stamped by Marvel, one of the film's writers has confirmed.

Yep, following the success of the previous two films, the foul-mouthed superhero looks to have been rewarded with a trilogy.

And while most fans have long-expected there to be a third instalment of the hit Marvel franchise, the Fox/Disney merger cast doubt over its future.

But now the film's co-writer Paul Wernick said while a lot remains to be sorted, he and Rhett Reese are just waiting for Marvel bosses to tell them when.

Speaking to Den of Geek, Paul said: "We're just waiting for the word from on high.

The film's writer has confirmed a third Deadpool is in the works.

"There's a lot to be sorted out, like how Deadpool fits into the Marvel Universe with the other characters of the MCU.

"Then it's, do the X-Men get in there at some point? Fantastic Four? There's a lot to be sorted out and I think we're all getting a much needed rest from Deadpool - Ryan and us and everybody."

But this isn't the only piece of good news to land over the past couple of days. While some fans have been concerned about whether there would be another movie, others have also been unsure as to whether the merger would see their favourite character watered down.

Well, writer Paul has assured us that Marvel - which is owned by Disney - has promised to allow his team to continue making R-rated movies. The US' R-rating is also known as 'restricted', and means that viewers aged under 17 will require an accompanying parent or adult guardian in cinemas.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he said: "We're always in touch with Ryan [Reynolds, who plays Deadpool].

"I think the party line and truth is we're all still figuring it out. Marvel has promised to continue to let us play in the R-rated Deadpool universe, and the hope is that they will also let us veer into the MCU [Marvel Cinematic Universe] a little bit as well and play in that sandbox.

"Our feeling and Ryan's feeling is that it's got to be the right idea, it's got to be great."

He continued: "I think once we collectively agree what idea that great idea is, we'll be off to the races. Ryan's super-busy, we've got a lot of projects lined up, but we wake up thinking about Deadpool, and we go to sleep thinking about Deadpool."
