Harrison Ford has been given a hero's farewell to his beloved character of Indiana Jones.

Crowds at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival gave the actor a five-minute standing ovation for the fifth film in the franchise.

Ford, who has played Indiana Jones over a whopping four decades, fought back tears several times at the premiere of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

He looked out at the crowd of his loved ones and peers and saw nothing but love and adoration.

Speaking to the crowd, the 80-year-old said how touched he was by the recognition for his decades-long career.

He was also blown away as he was given a surprise Palme d’Or, the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival.

A reel of his greatest roles played on the screen, from Star Wars to The Fugitive.

"I’m very moved by this," Ford said, as per Variety.

"They say when you’re about to die, you see your life flash before your eyes, and I just saw my life flash before my eyes.

"A great part of my life, but not all of my life."

He added: "My life has been enabled by my lovely wife, who has supported my passion and my dreams, and I’m grateful.”

He then addressed the audience. "I love you, too. But I’ve got a movie you ought to see. It’s right behind me.

"So let me get out of the way, and thank you again for this great honour."

The fifth Indiana Jones was then screened to audiences, months after first glimpses were caught in September alongside co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge and director James Mangold.

Once everyone got to see it, Ford choked up as he indicated this is goodbye to his take on Indiana Jones.

He said: "Indiana Jones movies are about fantasy and mystery, but they’re also about heart.

"We have a really great story to tell, as well as a movie that will kick your ass."

With a lump in his throat, Ford praised the work of his on-screen colleague Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

He told fans: "Thank you for making these films such an incredible experience for all of us.

"I’m very proud to say that this one is fantastic. [Pointing at Waller-Bridge] and this is one of the reasons."

Sadly, Ford also alluded to this latest Indiana Jones instalment being the last time he will comprise the role, saying: "This is it. I will not fall down for you again. But thank you so much."

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is set to arrive in cinemas on 30 June 2023.
