Mads Mikkelsen Wants One More Hannibal Season To Explore Silence Of The Lambs

The series has seen a new wave of popularity after the show's three seasons began streaming on Netflix.

Fans were devastated when Hannibal was cancelled after just three seasons.

But the show's star, Mads Mikkelson, said he would still be keen for a fourth season in order to explore the original book's most famous storylines.

While Hannibal's third season - particularly the final scene - served as a fitting finale for the dark series, it's still a shame the it was forced to end before it was able to access material from Silence of the Lambs, with Fuller previously revealing he wanted to include the character of Clarice Starling.

While Fuller had the rights to material from the Hannibal Lecter novels Red Dragon and Hannibal, he didn't have the rights to Silence of the Lambs, which had been owned by MGM at the time Hannibal was in production.

While hitting the promotion trail for his latest movie, Mads Mikkelson has spoken about his time on the show playing Dr Hannibal Lecter and revealed he would be more than happy to return to the show and explore a fourth season if given the chance.

"I don't think it's a secret that if it does happen, we would love to go into Silence of the Lambs," Mikkelsen told Indie Wire.

"That's always been an issue because they didn't have the rights for that book. But that's obviously the most famous part and we'd love to go in there. We'd obviously switch it around a little and do all kinds of crazy stuff with it.

"That story is so interesting and the characters in it are as interesting. We'd switch around the genders and maybe even put two characters into one.

"We would love to find someone to play Buffalo Bill. That's going to be tough. We found a Hannibal, so it's possible."

While the 55-year-old praised fellow actor Ted Levine for his performance as Buffalo Bill in Jonathan Demme's Silence of the Lambs, he revealed who his ultimate pick would have been for the iconic role.

"We already used Michael Pitt for Mason and that was fantastic. If he wasn't playing Mason I'd love to see him as Buffalo Bill," Mads said.

Pitt appeared in season two of Hannibal as sociopath Mason Verger, who was also the abusive twin brother of Hannibal's patient Margot Verger.

While the show was cancelled in 2015, Mikkelson is holding onto hope that one day it may be revived - given its newfound success on Netflix.

He said: "The show is becoming bigger and bigger. The greater the breaks between seasons, the more people become followers."

Netflix has been known to bring series back from the dead (as well as cancelling them) so we can only hope.
