Fifty-four-year-old actress Nicole Kidman has graced the cover of this month's issue of Vanity Fair magazine, its 28th Hollywood issue.

The article covers everything from her recent role as Lucille Ball to making herself sick playing an abuse survivor in Big Little Lies.

It also delves into her 'allergy' to introspection and her quest to remain humble.

The story itself, however, isn't what's causing waves.

Instead, observers have taken issue with Kidman's apparently heavily photoshopped image on the cover.

Those criticising the artistic direction of the cover, and Kidman's appearance within it, have questioned why a 'strikingly beautiful' 54-year-old woman is being paraded to look like a schoolgirl.

Others posited that while Kidman has a fit physique, the one adorning the cover of the magazine is not it.

The performer has acted in over 80 film and television projects over multiple decades.

She's nominated for Best Actress at the upcoming 94th Acadamey Awards for her role as Ball in Being the Ricardos.

She's been nominated for the same award multiple times before, including for her role in Moulin Rouge! in 2001 and Rabbit Hole in 2010. She took home the Oscar for Best Actress in 2002 for The Hours.

Her role as Ball has aleeasdy seen her win last year's Best Actress in a Motion Pictutre - Drama at the Golden Globe Awards.
