Mike Myers Makes His Long-Awaited Return To Comedy With New Netflix Series 'The Pentaverate'

Mike Myers Makes His Long-Awaited Return To Comedy With New Netflix Series 'The Pentaverate'

The upcoming Netflix show will be Myers' first major comedy role since 2008's 'The Love Guru', and sees the actor playing eight characters.

Mike Myers is officially back, and has offered us a tantalising glimpse at his upcoming Netflix show ‘The Pentaverate’ with a new teaser trailer that dropped today, 16 March. The comedy series will premiere on the streaming giant on 5 May, and you can watch the clip below:

In what looks to be a throwback to the Austin Powers era, Myers will be playing eight characters in the upcoming mini-series, which will effectively be the Shrek star’s first major comedy outing since 2008’s The Love Guru.

According to Netflix’s official synopsis, the show is a 'comedy event series' which poses the question: “What if a secret society of five men has been working to influence world events for the greater good since the Black Plague of 1347?

“As this new series begins, one unlikely Canadian journalist finds himself embroiled in a mission to uncover the truth and just possibly save the world himself. Remember, the Pentaverate must never be exposed!” it adds.

Among the eight characters inhabited by Myers are the aforementioned Canadian journalist Ken Scarborough, New England conspiracy theorist Anthony Lansdowne, former media mogul Bruce Baldwin, Russian oligarch Mishu Ivanov, head of the Pentaverate Lord Lordington, and tech wiz Jason Eccleston, who designed the society’s all-powerful supercomputer, MENTOR.

Ken Jeong, Keegan-Michael Key, Debi Mazar, Richard McCabe, Jennifer Saunders and Lydia West help round out the rest of the cast, with the ever-dependable Jeremy Irons also on board as the series’ narrator.

The series will be seen as a big comeback opportunity for Myers, who has kept a low profile in recent years after the aforementioned Love Guru and its less-than-favourable reviews.

Despite this setback he has continued to appear in a number of lower-profile roles in the interim, making a cameo as both Austin Powers and Dr.Evil in 2021’s Space Jam: A New Legacy, and before that playing a major part in 2018’s Oscar-winning Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. He also took the time to host 20 episodes of The Gong Show on American network ABC.

The Pentaverate seems to be a project close to Myers’ heart though, with the concept hearkening back to the actor’s 1993 horror-comedy So I Married An Axe Murderer, in which Myer’s character Stuart Mckenzie rants about a five-man secret society of the same name, which allegedly includes The Queen, The Vatican and Colonel Sanders as members.

Netflix will air six 30-minute episodes of The Pentaverate, which was created by Myers and directed by Fleabag’s Tim Kirkby. The series will be released worldwide on 5 May.
