Netflix viewers have taken to social media to rave about a mystery mini-series that is currently sitting at a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Watched for more than 26,000,000 hours since its release, the show has left viewers saying that ‘Netflix is not playing’ following the release of the show, as well as recent series Dept Q.
The show follows a seaside town named Evelyn Bay that is left shaken after two men and a young girl, named Gabby, are killed by a horrible storm.
The younger brother of one of the men killed, Kieran Elliot, returns to Evelyn Bay after years away, and another girl is found dead soon after, exposing years of secrets and lies.
Netflix’s adaptation of a best-selling Australian novel is called The Survivors, and stars Charlie Vickers, Yerin Ha, Shannon Berry, and Robyn Malcolm.
If the perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes didn’t make it obvious – the show has been well received, leading it to still be in the number three spot on Netflix’s charts in the UK almost two weeks after it came out.
The number two show worldwide, it lies only behind the hotly anticipated Ginny and Georgia in the Netflix charts across the globe.
One viral TikTok about the show was behind the claim that Netflix ‘is not playing’, with TV and film influencer SunsetPodcast saying: “You cannot go wrong with a good ass crime series… Go watch The Survivors on Netflix right now.
“I’m telling you right now this is show is one of them ones!”
This was a view shared over on Reddit, with one TV fan asking whether it was worth asking being met with several fans encouraging them to binge it.
One comment read: “I enjoyed it! Might not be the best show ever made but I was hooked, enjoyed the acting/plot and felt strangely reflective at the end.
The Survivors has gotten rave reviews from critics (Netflix) “At least for me, it made me think about some deep stuff. Give it a shot!”
Another fan claimed they stayed up until the middle of the night binging it, saying on X: “If anyone needs a show to watch, The Survivors on Netflix is really good! It’s a slow burn, crime thriller. Didn’t think I’d like it and stayed up until 3AM watching the first 5 episodes.”
This is matched amongst TV critics too. Lucy Mangan, the Guardian’s expert TV critic, gave the show a four-star review, saying it was ‘so intense you’ll have to watch through your fingers’.
She went on to add: “This adaptation of the bestselling Australian crime novel is full of twists, turns and red herrings. Its focus on the terrible grief of bereaved mothers makes it a cut above.
“The Survivors is a study in how raw grief and festering resentment warp everything -- and how surviving a tragedy rarely means getting away unscathed.”
The Survivors is available to stream on Netflix now.
