Free Guy has become Ryan Reynolds' highest rated movie ever on Rotten Tomatoes, according to audience score, having managed to surpass previous hits like Deadpool and The Hitman's Bodyguard.

In Free Guy, Reynolds stars as Guy, an everyman bank teller who lives inside a video game called Free City as a non-player character.

He suddenly becomes self-aware as the result of some extra coding by two of the game's programmers (played by Jodie Comer and Joe Keery), and soon Guy helps them rebel against Free City's new corporate owner (Taika Waititi).

After being released this week, the new flick has proven to be a firm favourite among fans - who have collectively awarded it a not-too-shabby 95 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

20th Century Fox

This means it is now Reynolds' highest-rated film - well, aside from 2019's Great Bear Rainforest: Land of the Spirit Bear, on which Reynolds served as narrator, but that's not really in the same ballpark.

The Croods: A New Age comes in second place with 94 percent, followed by Deadpool and its 2018 sequel, which have 90 percent and 85 percent, respectively.

Free Guy has also received a 81 perfect critics' consensus, with a summary on the Rotten Tomatoes website saying: "After enduring setbacks as large as a studio merger and a worldwide pandemic, Free Guy is finally here, and according to the reviews, it's absolutely worth the wait."

The site continues: "It's probably safe to say that few people expected this film to be anything more than a mild diversion, but Free Guy has become the surprise of the summer, with critics calling it a relentlessly optimistic, laugh-out-loud funny comedy that lovingly pokes fun at gamer culture but offers enough entertainment value for video game agnostics.

"It may not hit all of its targets, but it's goofy, earnest, action-packed, and hilarious, which feels pretty spot-on for a summer movie success."

In fact, the buzz has been so big that Disney has already confirmed it's lining up a sequel.

Breaking the news to fans, Reynolds wrote on Twitter: "Aaaannnnd after 3 years messaging Free Guy as an original IP movie, Disney confirmed today they officially want a sequel. Woo hoo!! #iron."

He added: "If it isn't called, 'Albuquerque Boiled Turkey' we've failed."

It's no wonder that Reynolds is thrilled, given that he's said the movie is actually his favourite one he's ever made.

He introduced a new trailer at Comic Con Experience (CCXP) in Brazil back in 2019, where he revealed just how much he enjoyed making it.

Speaking to the audience, he said: "We really wanted to bring to the world a modern day Back to the Future for modern generations.

"Free Guy is my favourite movie I've ever made, and that means a lot to me because I made Deadpool."

Free Guy is out in cinemas now.
