Did you know whisky can be used in espresso martinis? Called an Irish espresso martini, it uses whisky instead of vodka, which can give it a warming, caramel-like flavour.

If you’re keen to try it, a great scotch whisky option is Wee Smoky, which launched in Australia in November 2024 and, to celebrate the launch, is currently discounted from $79 to $74 at Liquorland. By Edinburgh-based Wee Spirits, the spirit is single-grain and finished in peated casks. It was created especially for cocktail mixing, though with its light, fruity and smoky notes, it tastes great sipped on its own too.

“While we have huge respect for the industry, we invite people to challenge the pre-conceived rules associated with Scotch whisky and drink Wee Smoky however they want, with whatever they want,” says Rory Gammell, one of Wee Spirits’ three founders, via Aussie drinks publication Drinks Trade.

The bottle is a deep ocean-blue with the ‘Wee Smoky’ name in white graffiti font, designed to stand out in a sea of beige. The drink was made in Scotland and has a 40% alcohol content. One bottle equates to 22 standard drinks.

“Our mission was simple: create a great whisky that looks and feels modern,” says Gammell. “We’ve been overwhelmed by Australia’s response – it’s clear they were ready for a fresh, fun take on whisky.”

If you’re using Wee Smoky for an Irish espresso martini (and yes, technically, you’re making a Scotch espresso martini), there are a few recipes to follow. One way to make it is with coffee liqueur like Kahlua, whisky, espresso coffee and ice cubes. If you want the cocktail to be creamier, you might use an Irish cream liqueur like Baileys instead of a coffee liqueur. For extra flavour, add nutmeg and garnish with coffee beans.

Grab Wee Smoky Scotch Whisky online at Liquorland for its launch discount price of $74.
