People freaking out after seeing claustrophobic reality of visiting Egyptian pyramids

People can't believe how narrow the passageways are

Millions of people flock to Egypt each year to visit the Pyramids of Giza - to soak up the history, appreciate the architecture and gasp at the Great Sphinx.

We know you have to arrive early to beat the crowds and that being respectful at all times is mandatory during your visit... however, a lot of tourists have no idea about how much ducking is involved in the trip.

Although everyone is usually stood tall in their holiday snaps which make it to Instagram, it turns out that you'll actually be spending a significant chunk of your day stooped over while exploring the pyramids.

And people have been left feeling pretty claustrophobic after seeing footage of how you get in and out of the ancient monuments.

The pyramids, which are the last standing monuments of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, are made up of a series of intricate passageways inside.

These weren't constructed with accessibility in mind and the routes can be pretty difficult to navigate - as in the words of this visitor, the tunnels become 'smaller and smaller' as you continue.

Swiss travel blogger Jess Melu headed to the pyramids in 2023 while holidaying in Egypt and documented her experience to show her more than 350,000 TikTok followers.

In the clip, she can be seen standing outside the pyramids before entering through a small door and heading down a staircase, before then making her way through an increasingly narrow passageway and entering a room inside.

Sharing the post, she wrote: "Let me show you the inside of a pyramid in Egypt. Would you be scared?"

Turns out, a lot of people would be scared, as a quick glance at the comment section of Jess' video will show you.

It appears as though a lot of social media users really don't like small spaces, as the majority of viewers confessed they wouldn't be able to travel through the tight passageway.

One commented: "My breath literally ceased just by watching this from my bed. My claustrophobia won't let me try this."

Another joked: "Claustrophobia has entered the chat."

While a third added: "Nah, I was hyperventilating just watching this."

And a fourth chimed in: "I couldn’t do it. I’d also be the person to fall and wipe everyone out."

Others also pointed out that it gets increasingly warmer the further you head inside of the pyramids, as unfortunately, air conditioning came long after the Ancient Egyptians.

Essentially, it sounds like you ought to prepare for a cramped, sweaty and physically demanding journey if you head inside of the monuments - but apparently, it's all worth it.

As another visitor explained, although it's not exactly glamorous, the experience is 'so epic' that he reckons nothing else in life will ever compare.

So... anyone fancy Egypt and a day trip to the pyramids?
