A cruise line has launched a special ‘Golden Passport’ scheme, which allows passengers to - theoretically - live onboard forever.
While going on one of these big ships to see a few different places might be considered a holiday by a lot of us, it’s a way of life for plenty of others.
There seem to be more and more stories about couples selling their belongings and swapping a life on land for a life at sea.
And Villa Vie Residences in particular is a popular choice for those wanting to live on cruise ships. The cruise liner belatedly launched its Odyssey cruise last October, offering passengers the chance to travel the world with stops at 425 ports across 147 countries over three-and-a-half years.

More people can get onboard with life at sea now with this new Golden Passport offering.

While Villa Vie Residences offers up the choice to own, rent, or lease life cabins on board for anyone, this new offering is specifically for the retired - and shall we say, ‘golden’ cruiser.
Calling it a ‘passport to the world’, the company’s founder said: “As people retire, one of their biggest fears is outliving their money. With the Golden Passport, that uncertainty disappears — one payment secures a lifetime of adventure.”
The offer enables people to secure a lifetime villa with a one-time payment, with savings made according to age.

For example, for those aged 90 or above, prices start at $99,000 (£73,200) while the same Deck 2 Porthole starts at $299,000 (£221,090) for those between the ages of 55 and 59.
And the package includes ‘accommodation’, ‘inclusivity’ and ‘no hidden costs’.
That means dining, WiFi, activities, housekeeping and laundry are included, with residents even having access to annual medical check-ups.

Residents also won’t face any of the other typical additional charges for taxes, port fees or other travel expenses while sailing the world.

Plus, while they are travelling all over the place, they’ll still be able to see their family and mates, as they can be invited on board for a $129 (£95) per day fee.
There’s flexibility too, as 'Unlimited Usage' means people can stay aboard for any duration and as frequently as they want.
While Odyssey is currently the only ship in Villa Vie’s offering, it does say that this Golden Passport will be transferrable across its fleet.
And residents already making a life on board have previously spoken about finding an ‘instant family’.
