Influencer gets backlash for telling people to ‘just book a flight’ to Thailand

A travel influencer has been branded ‘out of touch’ for urging people to ‘just book a flight’ to Thailand.

A travel influencer has been branded ‘out of touch’ for urging people to ‘just book a flight’ to Thailand.

Kat Crittenden posted a video to TikTok on August 17, telling her followers to just 'get out' to Asia.

But viewers were quick to pick her up on the fact that you can’t really do that without a bit of money behind you.

In the video she asked viewers why they are still in America when they could be living it up in Thailand, but was met with a lot of people saying she was just 'privileged'.

The influencer says “Like come to Thailand, this s**t should sell you.”

She said: “What are y'all still doing in America?

"Like, this could literally be 5.30pm on a Thursday night for you, and you just have to book a freaking flight.

“Like come to Thailand, this s**t should sell you.”

While the sentiment of the video was simply just encouraging people to travel, the video, which now has over five million views, didn’t come across that way to fans.

Out of over 12,000 comments, the majority weren’t largely supportive.

One person said: “I'll put living paycheck to paycheck on hold so I can do that.

“Thanks for the advice”

Another said: “I don't have rich parents.”

Currently with 300K followers on TikTok posting regular travel videos, in an interview with the Insider, she said: “When I posted the video, I posted it fully as a happy, lighthearted video, just kind of trying to inspire people to go out there and explore the world.

“So I thought since my entire social media is all based on travel, I figured I would post a fun video.

"It was just like a one-shot speaking my mind being like, 'Oh, what are you guys doing in America?’ Go fly around the world.

“I understand that I do have a lot of privilege to be able to do what I do, but at the same time, it definitely upsets me that that video was taken the wrong way."

Kat then made a follow-up video to her original one, explaining how she isn’t quite as privileged as people had made her out to be.

The influencer said she didn't leave America until she was 18.

She rejected the fact that she had money growing up, and said she didn’t leave America until she was 18.

She said: “I would say the worst comments for me are when people say it's daddy's money because that could not be further from the truth.

"I feel like it just bothers me because I didn't have a good relationship with my dad growing up.

“I haven't even spoken to my dad in five years."

However, she said in the interview that she wouldn’t let the haters stop her from creating the content she loves, and of course continuing to travel.
