Friendly Whale Rescues Woman's Phone After It Falls Into The Sea

'There's quite enough plastic in the seas, thanks'

A beluga whale - bizarrely rumoured to be a Russian spy - returned a woman's phone to her after she dropped it in the sea.

If that isn't the weirdest sentence that you've heard today, what the hell do you do? Sounds great.

Anyway, you might have heard that recently a beluga whale tipped up near Hammerfest, Norway. That in itself is not unusual, however this one was fitted with a harness.

Now, either there have been great leaps in cetacean technology or apparel since we last checked in, or that whale had a harness put on it by a human.

Oh, and the harness reportedly had 'St Petersburg' written on it.

The whale was discovered with a harness strapped to it.

We don't know anything about how it got there, but there is a suspicion that it might have been trained by the Russian navy.

One thing we do know for sure about the whale is that it is really friendly.

The other day, a few people - including Ina Mansika - went down to the harbour to see if they could grab some time with the famous white whale.

Sure enough, the beluga - let's call it Bjorn since Benny is taken - showed up and was having the craic with them, until Ina accidentally dropped her phone into the water.

Nightmare.

Here it comes...

Despite the disaster, the whale swam down and grabbed the device to bring it back to the surface for her.

Ina explained to The Dodo: "We laid down on the dock to look at it [the whale] and hopefully get the chance to pat it.

"I had forgotten to close my jacket pocket and my phone fell in the ocean. We assumed it would be gone forever, until the whale dove back down and came back a few moments later with my phone in its mouth!"

Obviously, everyone present was amazed.

He seems like a happy soul.

Ina continued: "Everyone was so surprised. We almost didn't believe what we saw. I was super happy and thankful that I got my phone back."

Of course, the phone was knackered, rendered completely useless by the water. It's the thought that counts though, isn't it?

Is this a sign of the whale knowing what to do around humans? Did it just act on instinct? We may never know.

As for Bjorn the friendly whale, it will probably be taken to a sanctuary somewhere to stay safe. It might be too human-friendly to survive in the wild.

Whatever they do with it, let's hope it stays safe and happy. It's obviously got its heart in the right place.
