Conor McGregor has thanked God that he's still alive after being hit by a car while out riding his bike in Ireland.

The MMA fighter, 34, was cycling along a narrow two-way road with hedges at either side when the incident took place today (27 January).

It's unclear exactly where he was cycling when he was hit by the car, but he took to Instagram to share his experience as he explained that he was struck 'from behind'.

The fighter shared a picture of his bike abandoned in the middle of the road after the incident, while his water bottle lay cast on aside where it had fallen.

Thankfully the driver stopped to check if McGregor was okay - and was no doubt mortified to learn he'd accidentally struck not only a human, but a fighting champion and Irish icon.

Footage shared by McGregor showed the driver apologising repeatedly as the fighter assured him he was okay.

McGregor initially told the driver he didn't need anything from him, telling him 'safe travels', but he quickly changed his mind as he realised the bike was 'f*cked'.

The driver offered to take McGregor's bike out of the road, and the fighter accepted and joined him in the car for a lift home.

In a caption alongside the footage, McGregor said the accident happened while the driver was going 'full speed' and his vision became impaired by the sun.

He wrote: "Got a bang of a car just now from behind. A sun trap, the driver couldn’t see me. Full spreed straight thru [sic] me. Thank you God, it wasn’t my time. Thank you wrestling and judo also. Having an awareness on the landing saved my life."

Fans were quick to share their concerns with McGregor after he relayed his dramatic story online, with one responding, "Glad you’re ok man, wtf!," while another wrote: "Imagine hitting MacGregor [sic] with your car. Glad you’re ok Connor!"

McGregor might be someone who's used to taking a hit in his profession, but there's a big difference between a punch and an actual car. Thankfully the 34-year-old doesn't appear to have been too badly injured in the incident, even if he does have to invest in a new bike as a result.

As for the man who hit him - well, he certainly has a story to tell when he gets home from dropping off The Notorious.
