A new trailer has been released for a 360-degree, virtual reality documentary about rapper Eminem.

The film, entitled Marshall From Detroit will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, later this week and has been directed by Caleb Slain.

At just 21 minutes long, the film follows Marshall Mathers on a night time car journey through the streets of Detroit. Eminem gives the viewer a personal, reflective tour through the town that gave him everything.

The rapper was raised and came to fame in the city and obviously retains a lot of pride and affection for his hometown, which is famous for building cars, Motown Records, and - in recent years - poverty and dereliction.

The immersive piece of cinema is produced by Felix & Paul Studios, who say that they specialise in 'creating unparalleled virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality experiences for audiences worldwide'.

They've previously experimented with techniques such as stop-motion video and time lapse recording. Now, they intend to take the viewer on a journey through the dark streets of Detroit with Slim Shady - an equally bizarre and inventive premise.

The VR Eminem documentary will premiere at Sundance Film Festival this weekend.

Director Slain told Variety: "Our idea was to extend the blanket of intimacy offered by VR beyond the once-in-a-lifetime ride with Marshall and introduce you to a more mystic version of Detroit you could never see for yourself.

"We wanted to take the 'reality' out of VR and cook it down into something more unreal, but also truthful."

Eminem rose to prominence in Detroit.

He continued: "A lot of VR is not particularly stimulating to me because it doesn't challenge the orthodoxy of space and how reality is supposed to play out.

"I think the most exciting VR ahead will be at the intersection of spatial surrealism and dramatic realism."

Felix & Paul Studios co-founder Paul Raphael added: "Our studio has a history of using technology to tell stories in new, more immersive ways, to create experiences that are at the convergence of the intimate and the extraordinary,"

"Marshall From Detroit is a sparkling expression of that, inviting you on a surreal ride through Detroit with Eminem himself."

Of course, if you want to watch this film you're going to need some sort of VR technology.

While the film will premiere at Sundance this coming Saturday, it will be released next month and available to those lucky enough to own either of Facebook's Oculus Go or Rift VR headsets.
