A man has given a popular military sleep method a go, and he revealed if it's effective or if it's just a load of malarkey.

You may have heard of the popular sleeping technique in the past, which was said to have been used by members of the military to fall asleep in a number of different situations.

It feels more difficult than ever to fall asleep nowadays, thanks to the likes of social media and TV keeping us occupied past bed time, more times than not.

Sometimes though, you could find yourself in bed early enough, but you'll spend time tossing and turning stressing about things you might have tomorrow or worse yet, about the fact that you're not going to get enough sleep.

So, does this supposedly revolutionary method help you get those seven to nine hours for your health and wellbeing?

What is the military sleep method?

The method is relatively simple and doesn't take much preparation, in case you were wondering about how much time you'll need to dedicate to pulling this off.

It's not quite counting sheep, but fighter pilots use this method to make sure they are well-rested and their reflexes are left unaffected.

Starting off by getting yourself comfortable in bed, you try to relax your body from head to toes, according to YouTuber Sean Andrew, who decided to give the method a go for a week.

Previously, fitness coach Justin Agustin has claimed that people can fall asleep within two minutes if it's done correctly, and that it works for 96 percent of the population - sounds promising.

Does the military sleep method work?

The technique was made public for the first time in the 1981 book Relax and Win: Championship Performance, written by American track and field coach Lloyd Bud Winter, though this version said to work from the scalp, to the temple, to the forehead, and down the body.

Andrew said to tense every part of your body bit by bit, from your face to your hands and feet, before letting go and completely relaxing.

The content creator then said that you have to repeat 'do not think' to yourself in order to distract your mind.

He admitted that he didn't find success with until he filmed the video and saw himself 'dozing', with the method ultimately working in the end.

It might take some practice to perfect the effectiveness of the method, and to change your sleeping habits for good.

You may need more that this to fall asleep though, as many have found success with lifestyle changes such as cutting out or cutting down on booze.

Regardless, sleep is more important than many may think and the next time you find yourself struggling to get some shut-eye, this may be worth a try.
