Shocking and confronting dashcam footage has emerged on social media showing a cyclist assault a passenger in a car.

The clip has been uploaded by the Dashcam Owners Australia Facebook page and has since gone viral.

The incident happened in Melbourne and it shows a Mercedes vehicle cruising through the street until a passenger appears to throw rubbish out of the car.

Whether it was coordinated or accidental, it seems the rubbish landed smack bang onto a cyclist who was on the side of the road.

Not one to back down from alleged slight, the cyclist is seen chasing after the Mercedes and when the car comes to a red light, the male cyclist unloads on the passenger.

The bloke on two wheels manages to get a few punches in before the light turns green and the Mercedes speeds off.

People rallied around the cyclist, which is a rarity for the Facebook page, and many praised him for putting the passenger in their place.

One person said: "Yeah fair reaction from the cyclist. I'd have done the same thing or worse. A knee in the door would have been justified."

Another added: "Good on him for getting some payback, pity he didn't have a bottle of coke or something to pour in the passengers lap."

A third wrote: "Fluid dismount from the cyclist, followed by a seamless transition into punching the crap out of the moron in the passenger seat all whilst he maintained a complicated sidestep as the driver tried to take off....that was impressive."

There haven't been any mentions from Victoria Police about whether the incident was being investigated for assault.
