McDonald's fans shocked after finding out what's in Sweet 'n' Sour dip

McDonald's fans have been left shocked after finding out what goes into the restaurant's top tier Sweet 'n' Sour dip. Check it out:

Most of us know what we're getting ourselves in for when we order a Maccies, right? Fat, salt, carbs, and perhaps some meat depending on your diet.

But for those who enjoy their fries and chicken nuggets with sauce on the side, you might be surprised to know that the Sweet 'n' Sour variety is actually made up of a very unexpected fruit.

This was brought to our attention by TikToker Evan-May Gillott (@evs_kii), who was just as shocked as the rest of the UK after finding out the 'secret' ingredient.

In a video that's been viewed nearly 350,000 times, she said: "Sweet 'n' Sour sauce, McDonald's – am I the only one who didn't know what fruit it's made of? Have a guess..."

So, what could it be? Pineapple juice is not uncommon in sweet and sour sauce recipes, or perhaps mango as it's often used in chutney?

If you went for either of these options you would be wrong. As explained by Evan-May, it's actually apricot.

Clearly shocked at the revelation, she said: "It's f***ing apricot... it's apricot."

Hundreds of people have shared their surprise, with one writing: "I said mango SO confidently... I had no idea that it was even a fruit."

In response, the TikToker said: "Honestly I never even thought about it, I just ate it. Something told me to read the ingredient whilst eating my chippies and I was shoooooketh."

"Low-key thought it was pineapple," said another, while a third added: "I didn’t know it had fruit in it."

Before you start asking, no – it doesn't count as one of your five a day, unfortunately.

While some were interested by the answer, others were downright disgusted, including this person who tagged their friend and wrote: "Our favourite sauce and the worst fruit."

Another commented: "I would like to know why you would shatter my world view like that. Explain, please. Thank you."

A third added: "No wonder I don’t like it!! Curry girl till I die."

Some people also claimed the dip is a 'savoury version' of the sauce in the Apple Pies, which I think we can all agree is a rather unsettling idea.

If only Maccies brought back the Szechuan sauce for good there'd be none of this confusion.
