Controversial 'shock model' Marisa Papen reportedly faces up to three years in jail for taking part in nude photoshoots in some of Turkey's most famous landmarks - including a notable mosque.

The 28-year-old model, originally from Belgium, took the snaps back in 2018 after travelling to Turkey with Australian photographer Jesse Walker for a photoshoot for his label ENKI Eyewear.

What resulted was a number of x-rated snaps, including one of Papen lifting up her burka to reveal her genitalia inside Istanbul's iconic Hagia Sophia - a former Byzantine church and Ottoman mosque.

She also posed naked in the arid region of Cappadocia - and it didn't take long until it caught the attention of Istanbul's Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.

According to local media, an investigation is already underway. If caught, the Playboy model - who describes herself as a 'free-spirited and wild-hearted expressionist' - could be charged with committing 'deceiving acts' and 'publicly humiliating the state's sovereignty'.

An arrest warrant has reportedly been issued so that Turkish authorities can take her in for a statement regarding the incident.

This isn't the first time Papen's been in trouble with the law, having made a name for herself around the world for her anti-religious antics.

Back in April last year, she was subjected to a backlash for her comments about the tragic incident in Paris that saw much of the ancient cathedral of Notre Dame destroyed.

As the fire ripped through the cathedral, which is widely considered to be one of the world's most important historical and architectural gems, Papen took to social media to say: "Churches are burning... A new era is gonna come!!!!"

The model previously made the headlines when she was imprisoned after posing naked at the Karnak Temple Complex near the Egyptian city of Luxor.

She caused outrage among religious communities for posing nude in the holy city of Jerusalem to the backdrop of the Wailing Wall, considered one of the most important sites in Judaism.

And, in November last year, Papen posed for a series of photos in Iceland to highlight the effects of climate change as part of her project 'PLASTICSUSHI'.

Marisa told Central European News at the time: "I had to strip off and lie on the ice. I didn't see any other naked person jumping around laughing, it was certainly a challenge but I enjoyed every moment."
