A McDonald's drive-thru restaurant in Leicester has become a coronavirus testing centre, after being temporarily handed over to a private health company.

DHU Healthcare has begun to test key workers on the site, after it closed to customers in March following the outbreak of Covid-19.

A McDonald's spokesperson told LADbible: "Last week McDonald's handed over use of its Meridian Business Park Drive-Thru in Leicester for use by DHU Healthcare for Covid-19 testing for NHS workers.

"Despite restaurants remaining closed, employees and franchisees have continued serving their local communities and supporting national organisations, helping those that need it the most."

The fast food chain recently responded to rumours that had circulated online claiming restaurants were due to reopen in May - and it wasn't good news for Maccies lovers, I'm afraid.

A statement was released on social media after various reports claimed the Golden Arches would be open for business again in a few weeks, saying there are 'no confirmed reopening plans at this time'.

Posting on 24 April, the UK Twitter account said:

If you are in need of a fast food fix, then you may be able to treat yourself to something from KFC, as the brand has so far reopened 21 of its restaurants across the UK.

The chosen ones are offering a limited menu and takeaway only service. A KFC spokesperson confirmed the chain was looking into reopening further restaurants over the coming weeks - but only if it was considered safe to do so.

These are the stores that are currently taking orders, with a limited menu:

  • Heaton Chapel - Stockport
  • Tamworth
  • New Oscott - Birmingham
  • Manchester - Hulme
  • Manchester Deansgate
  • Portsmouth
  • Aldershot - Hampshire
  • Ipswich - Cardinal Park
  • Glasgow - Pollockshaw Road
  • Glasgow - Great Western Retail Park
  • Enfield - Coliseum Retail Park
  • Bury - Moorgate Retail Park
  • Bently Bridge - Bentley Bridge Pleasure Park
  • Great Bridge - Great Bridge Retail Park
  • Romford Gallows - Colchester Road
  • Tyburn - Kingsbury Road
  • Norwich - Mile Cross Lane
  • Brighton - Western Road
  • Putney - High Street
  • Mornington Crescent
  • Hammersmith - Kings Street

You can order for delivery only at the moment, with Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats all accepting requests for meals.

You might end up paying a bit more than usual though, with each platform setting their own delivery fees. It's not possible to order from the KFC website currently.
