A police dog has been killed by a man with an axe, reportedly screaming 'Allahu Akbar'.

Officers were called to a property in Schiedam, Holland, following reports of a man with an axe on a balcony, NU reports.

Trained police attempted to calm the man down, even speaking with his dad on the phone, however, he continued to shout and wave the weapon around.

Armed police stormed the property, where the man lived with his dad, with plans to taser him but the man then lashed out hit the dog with the axe.

The dog later died of its wounds, police confirmed.

The 26-year-old man was shot by cops after attempts to calm him down failed - he was rushed into hospital in a critical condition with wounds to his legs and stomach, the Mirror reports.

He has since undergone surgery and is said to be in a stable condition.

Schiedam Mayor Cor Lamers released a statement saying that the man was Syrian and had been living in the city with his dad since 2017.

Speaking to local newspaper NU, he said: "The man was known to several help organisations but this was an escalation we had not seen coming.

"It is serious that this happened in a residential area. Although the situation took place in a home, bystanders did see what was happening. I can imagine that it was frightening.

"In the coming period, we will be conducting a full investigation into what happened."

A spokesperson for the police said: "We are now going to look into our system what we know about this man."

In a tribute to the dog on Twitter, Rotterdam Police wrote: "This hero made the highest sacrifice yesterday during a detention in Schiedam."
