New study reveals how long the average man actually lasts in bed

Better set those timers, lads

A new study has answered the question we've all been asking by revealing exactly how long the average man lasts in bed.

While sex isn't a competition, it seems as if everyone on the internet these days is keen to brag about how many people they're doing it with, how often people should be doing it, or even the weird positions that they're doing it in.

Now, a general study would probably reveal that some people who feel the need to brag about these things are often the ones who are most insecure, and it's probably best to keep what happens in the bedroom between you and your partner.

Porn and real-life sex are also very different, and doctors have warned about the effects of consuming too much X-rated content on the internet, as it may negatively impact your own performance in the bedroom.

Fortunately, a study from Lovehoney has helped put a figure on the sort of numbers that average blokes are posting, although I would also argue that people are perhaps always likely to add a few minutes onto their own answers.

These aren't necessarily a ball park to aim for, as everyone's experience will be different, but here are the reported numbers from different age groups:

Those aged between 18 and 24 registered an average time of 16.14 minutes in bed, with numbers ranging from just a few minutes to some suggesting that they're managing to last over an hour, as reported by Metro.

For those in the 25-34 bracket, when you have a bit more experience under their belt but still the fitness and stamina to match, the average time increases to 18.29 minutes.

But after this, I'm afraid it's all downhill, as 35-44 register an average time of 17.4 minutes, before dropping again to 14.14 minutes when you starting getting close to your 50s.

When the sore back and hips start coming into play between 55 and 64, the time drops again to 11.3 minutes and while you might hope that those retired folks might have a bit more time to get down and dirty, it seems as if they sadly no longer have the stamina, as they record the lowest average of just 8.15 minutes.

Sexual health nurse Sarah Mulindwa said: "Research shows that session length tends to peak in the late 20s to early 30s and gradually shortens as men get older.

"In your 20s, excitement and novelty are high, which can lead to quicker climaxes, but recovery is fast, and stamina is generally good. At this stage, it’s all about pacing – using edging, breathwork, or condoms strategically can help build control.

"However, what matters most at any age is communication, technique, and pleasure – not the stopwatch."

Does lasting longer in bed mean the sex is better?

According to AMI Australia, lasting longer in bed doesn’t automatically make you a better lover (sorry lads). While stamina does play a part, they explain that 'rather than focusing on how long his erection lasts, he should put some thought into what he does with it'. In other words, technique > timer.

They also point out that penetration isn’t the only route to satisfaction; things like oral or even well-timed foreplay can make a huge difference. And it’s not just about the penis, either. The mind, body, and blood flow all need to be working together for things to, well, perform as intended.
