Family respond to killer's comments in Netflix doc about twisted true story of man found dead after marrying children’s nanny

The haunting Netflix documentary dropped earlier this week

Netflix has released yet another gripping true crime series, with A Deadly American Marriage soaring to the top of the streaming service's most-watched list.

While it's often frustrating for viewers to watch along and sometimes never figure out exactly what happened, it can often inspire some conspiracy theories which makes the show spread quickly through word-of-mouth.

Fortunately, some docs actually do have an ending which leaves everyone happy, but others often leave us with more questions than answers.

We've seen all sorts of topics covered on Netflix in recent years, whether it be a millionaire who murdered their friend in a 'near-perfect crime', or the most prolific serial killers in UK history.

A Deadly American Marriage looks set to be another that leads to plenty of questions.

Released on 9 May, it tells the story of Jason Corbett, an Irish man who moved from Limerick to the United States in 2011 with his two children after marrying US native Molly Martens, who had been the children's former nanny.

They seemed to be living a perfect life until 2015 when Jason was found dead in his home, with Molly and her father Thomas eventually handed hefty prison sentences, having been found guilty of second-degree murder.

However, the pair maintained that Jason's death was down to 'self-defence', claiming that Jason threatened to kill Molly, and appealed the original verdict, receiving reduced sentences for manslaughter after a successful appeal.

They were released in June 2024 after receiving sentences of 51 to 74 months in prison.

In the documentary's trailer, Jason's son Jack says: "I never saw my dad ever lay hands on Molly." However, Thomas suggests that he has 'no regrets' regarding his actions.

And now, Jason's family have provided a response to Thomas' claims in A Deadly American Marriage.

As per MyLondon, they said: "How cold and callous Tom is, 'no regrets' for bludgeoning a man to death. No marks on him or Molly Martens. Self defence... don't make me laugh! Should have been first degree murder. I think you would all agree with me that Tom Martens' remarks on the Netflix trailer reflects exactly what a cold, calculating and callous killer he is. HE HAS NO REGRETS for his actions on August 2 2015. Jack and Sarah have to live with the consequences of his 'no regrets' every day of their lives."

The family has also shared why they chose to participate in the documentary and what they hoped it would achieve.

They explained: "Participating in the Netflix documentary was important to us because it highlights the profound impact of the absence of justice we faced in the judicial system. We are not alone in our experiences. We hope the documentary honors (sic) Jason's memory while advocating for justice and ensuring that the voices of victims are heard, especially when the judicial system has failed them."

The statement added: "Jason would have wanted us to speak out on his behalf - he was a loving and engaged person who valued connection and was a responsible, socially-engaged citizen.

"We hope that sharing our experiences on the platform will support victims of injustice by fostering resilience and promoting awareness and empowerment."

A Deadly American Marriage filmmakers Jessica Burgess and Jenny Popplewell told Tudum: "This film is structured like a trial. It presents key arguments from both sides and allows the audience to draw their own conclusions about the case."

They noted: "From the very beginning, we approached both families. For the film to remain objective and balanced, we never discussed information we learned with either side."
