A sequel to Napoleon Dynamite is in the works. In the inimitable words of our hero's brother Kip: "YESSS!"

It's been 16 years since the frizzy-haired teenager came into our lives. But now the star of the cult movie, Jon Heder, has revealed that he has been talking to writer-director Jared Hess about getting the gang back together.

Speaking during a virtual Wizard World panel with co-stars Efren Ramirez (Pedro) and Diedrich Bader (Rex), Heder said he was up for it - if they could get the right story.

He said: "I would come back if Jared decided, 'Hey, let's go ahead, and let's see if we can pull off the magic.'

"We've thought about it. We're always playing with the idea."

Heder added: "I know I've talked a little bit with Jared, and it's his baby, so I'm just like, 'You pull the trigger on that.'"

Jon Heder says he's been talking about making a sequel.

The original film follows the stilted escapades of awkward social outcast Napoleon, who lives in a small town in Idaho, and tries to help his new pal Pedro in his attempts to run for class president and win the affections of their classmate Summer.

But while the original 2004 film was a quirky coming-of-age tale, Heder said he thinks any sequel would have to have a darker tone to it.

The 42-year-old said that he would't be interested in telling a story where everyone just looked and acted the same way as they did before.

He explained: "I feel like the future for Napoleon would be a lot more raw and edgy. So whatever he comes up with would be fun to explore.

"Because I think whatever Jared comes up with wouldn't be your typical, 'let's do a sequel where they all look the same and they all act the same'. I think it would be an interesting development in their lives."

Ramirez then added: "It would have to be a bit different, but still in that whole genre of Napoleon Dynamite and his mind."

The original 2004 movie has become a cult classic.

Ramirez even shared his own idea for what life would look like for some of the characters, with Pedro now a father of five and married to Summer, and running his own bakery.

In this new world, Kip has also taken his fighting skills to the next level and become a cage fighter while martial arts instructor Rex is having some marital problems with wife Starla.

He said: "There's so much more depth to find through these characters, especially in their futures. That would be pretty interesting."

Please make it happen, it would be so... sweet.
