Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart are two of the greatest actors Britain has ever produced.

But as well as turning in countless powerful performances on the stage and screen, the pair of national treasures are also best mates.

And in recent years they really have been flaunting their friendship - even getting 'engaged'.

But for many years, they didn't really know each other. It was thanks to the fact they were both cast in the X-Men series that they managed to form such a close bond.

Speaking the Hollywood Reporter last year, Sir Patrick, 80, said: "We had adjoining trailers.

"On those kind of movies, you spend more time sitting in your trailer than you do in front of the camera.

The pair became close friends on the set of X-Men.

"So, Ian and I hung out together, drinking tea - and maybe in the afternoon, something a little stronger - and we got to know one another."

Adding: "And the charm of it was that we found that we had so much in common. And by the way, he married us, my wife (Sunny Ozell) and me. He performed the ceremony."

One of the most iconic demonstrations of the two knights' love for one another happened at the premier of Star Trek: Picard at the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square, in London, last year, when Sir Ian, 81, took the opportunity to jokingly propose to his long-time friend.

Pecking him on the check, Sir Ian got down on one knee and popped the big question to his pal, with Sir Patrick saying yes. Well, what else was he going to say?!

Sir Ian then planted a big old kiss on his pal.

But this wasn't the first time the pair shared a little smooch.

At the 2015 premiere of Mr Holmes, which saw Sir Ian play the elderly detective, the two also had a little kiss.

And even last year, despite the world falling apart and us all locked in our homes, the pair didn't let that stop them from sharing the love.

When Sir Patrick celebrated his 80th birthday, Sir Ian just had to send him a little message to wish him many happy returns, reciting a sonnet for his good friend, who had been sharing virtual #SonnetADay readings via Twitter during lockdown.

Sharing McKellen's efforts, Stewart wrote: "Sunny and my team took over for my birthday, and arranged this gift for today's reading: Sonnet 81 by @IanMcKellen. Thank you, dear Ian. #ASonnetADay."

After finishing the sonnet, McKellen looked into the camera with a smile and said: "And a very happy birthday, dear Patrick. Lots of love, Ian."

Keep the love coming, guys. We are all here for it.
