Fortunately for them, staff at the recycling depot found it and contacted police who were able to track down the couple

A couple accidentally threw away £15,000, which ended up at a recycling centre. And you think you're having a bad day.

The unnamed couple from Burnham-on-Sea had taken a bunch of boxes to the Recycle for Bathnes depot after they were clearing out the home of a recently deceased relative.

However, staff at the depot stumbled across the hidden fortune while on the hunt for some electrical cable and were rooting around in a box containing household items. I know which I'd rather lay my hands on...

The honest staff then alerted Avon and Somerset Police to tell them what they'd found, Somerset Live reports.

Cops were able to trawl through CCTV to find the car that had dropped off the boxes and then were able to find their address using the car's registration plate.

When police arrived at their home, the couple said they had been clearing the house of a relative who had recently passed when they dropped the boxes off at the recycling centre.

The couple went along to the police station and cops agreed their account of what happened matched up so they were able to reunite them with their cash - just before Christmas, which must have been nice.

According to Somerset Live, the couple told police that the dead relative had a habit of hiding money around the house in unusual places, but even they were surprised to learn how much had been stashed away inside the box of junk and was very almost lost forever.

With the money safely returned, Avon and Somerset Police thanked the recycling centre staff for their help in reuniting the cash with its rightful owner.

On Facebook, the force wrote: "We would like to say a big thank you to the staff at the recycling centre.

"Without their diligent attitude, integrity and assistance, the family would never have known about the money found, and we would not have been able to return it to them, especially in time for Christmas.

"Happy New Year everyone, from all of us at Avon and Somerset Police."

In response, the Bath and East Somerset Council wrote: We are proud of our waste and recycling teams who work hard all year 'round, and this is a lovely example of their diligence and professionalism.

"Our eagle-eyed member of staff who spotted the money is currently having a well-deserved Christmas break."
