Dad Pulls Out His Own Tooth With A Pair Of Pliers

Dad Pulls Out His Own Tooth With A Pair Of Pliers

The tooth, the whole tooth, and nothing but the tooth

A dad who couldn't get to the emergency dentist because of the coronavirus lockdown decided to take matters into his own hands and pull out his own tooth with a set of pliers.

Before we get stuck into this - please, for f***'s sake, DON'T DO THIS.

Pulling out your own teeth is not only extremely silly, it's also extremely dangerous. You're going to hurt yourself a lot, and the whole job sounds unbelievably unhygienic, too.

Oh, and ripping a tooth out exposes a hole, remember. That can get infected pretty easily.

Whilst that isn't a warning that most people need to hear, it turns out that 33-year-old Billy Taylor is not 'most people'.

He decided to try to numb the pain with a load of whisky - again, a really dumb idea - before spending an hour tearing the offending gnasher out of his own head, with the help of his young son.

Ah, precious family time, eh?

Taylor had tried to get an appointment at the dentist and called 111, too. He says that he was told that he was not going to get seen unless he was struggling to breathe.

That's when he struck upon the idea that he could perhaps be his own dentist.

So, he grabbed a spare pair of pliers that he has for work and took afew shots of Dutch courage to aid the process.

After much pushing, pulling, and - you'd have to imagine - screaming, the tooth came free and he claims the pain disappeared almost instantly.

Billy, from Axminster in Devon, did thankfully say that he wouldn't recommend that others try out his home dentistry crash course.

He explained: "I've had problems with that tooth for about two years.

"I've been to the dentist over it four times. They recapped it, I've had a root canal.

"I had toothache running up to the Bank Holiday weekend. It was getting worse and worse. The pain was excruciating.

"Then, on the Tuesday after, my face was swelling and I had a migraine on that side. I think it was an abscess.

"I phoned a dentist but they weren't very clear so I called 111. They said that I shouldn't go in until it was restricting my breathing.

"It got really bad that night and the swelling was getting worse. I was pretty wound up.

"I thought: 'Why don't I just do it myself?'."

Why not, indeed?

As an aircraft fitter, he had a spare set of wire-locking pliers hanging about, and did some research on YouTube so that he wasn't going in completely blind.

After scrolling right past videos like 'Don't Be Your Own Dentist' and 'People Who Pull Their Own Teeth Out Are Mugs' he enlisted his 11-year-old son Leo to watch in case he passed out during the procedure.

He continued: "I put the wire in the way that you floss. Once that was on it wasn't coming off.

"Me and my lad ripped it out - it took about an hour. The process was bloody painful. It was hideous. But I'm into motocross - I can put up with a lot.

"I probably wouldn't recommend it, unless you know what you are doing. You could crush the whole tooth.

"I said to Leo: 'If I faint, you need to call 999'. He was like: 'Oh my God, stop!'.

"But the swelling was obviously a serious infection which was spreading - it was puffing up."

Unfortunately, the British Dental Association has warned earlier this week that due to the coronavirus lockdown we might see an increase in have-a-go dentistry.

That's because people are suffering and in pain, but can't see a dentist.

Chairman Mick Armstrong said: "Whenever access problems emerge people with toothache take matters into their own hands.

"It's inevitable many desperate patients will resort to 'DIY dentistry' unless we see rapid action from government."

Still, it bears repeating - DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME.

Come on, guys.
