Police have issued a warning to residents in Ayrshire after reports of a 'black panther' roaming the area.

The 'big cat' was seen near a popular dog-walking spot between the village of Drongan and Coalhall.

Police have said the animal may be injured and are working with the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) to try and locate it. In the meantime, residents are being urged to be vigilant but to not approach it if they do happen to come across it.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: "Residents in Drongan and Coalhall are being advised by officers to be vigilant after a report has been received of a sighting of what is believed to be a black panther in the fields near to the B730 between the two villages.

"Officers are currently working with the SSPCA to locate the animal which may be injured.

"The area is popular with dog walkers so care should be taken and if anyone sees the animal we would ask you not to approach it."

Bizarre sightings of 'big cats' aren't uncommon in the UK, with people reporting seeing the animals in Dorset, Lincolnshire and the West Midlands this year.

Despite the sightings, police or animal experts are yet to actually catch a big cat out in the wild, and most put the reports down to mistaken identity.
