A woman who lost 10st in just 15 months was mistaken for her husband's mistress, after a friend didn't recognise her new, slimmed-down figure.

Mum-of-four Sarah Buchanan was previously morbidly obese, weighing 24st 11lbs and struggling to fit into a size 26.

But when she went to see her GP in August 2019, she was not only told that she had diabetes, but that she may also need gastric bypass surgery.

Sarah, 34, said: "It was shocking, but it was scary when they told me I might need surgery.

"I didn't realise quite how bad I had got.

"It was worrying and I felt like I could have a heart attack at any minute and not be there for my children."

Over the next 10 months, Sarah ditched the unhealthy food and started making homemade meals from scratch.

After overhauling her diet, she lost 10st 4lbs to slim down to 14st 7lbs, and is now able to slip into a size 14.

In fact, she became so unrecognisable after the weight loss that it even prompted a bit of an awkward misunderstanding when a friend thought her husband Daniel, 39, was cheating on her.

Sarah, a health care assistant from St Austell, Cornwall, said: "We were waiting outside for my dad to pick us up and my friend spotted us and thought Dan had another woman by his side.

"Then she realised it was still me.

"It was quite funny and flattering really.

"My husband has got a new woman - quite literally it seems.

"Finding out the diagnosis frightened me so I knew I had to do something.

"I finally feel like the real me. I feel happy."

Daniel, also a health care assistant, added: "I feel like I have got a new wife.

"She looks so different that people have thought she was another woman, it's quite funny really.

"People just can't believe how much she has changed.

"I am so proud of her. It's incredible that she has lost so much in such a short space of time."

Sarah had been eating unhealthily since childhood, having developed a penchant for bread and sandwiches.

Having always been overweight, she suffered bulling as a child, saying: "I was called a 'fat pig' and 'fat cow', it was horrible."

But now Sarah feels 'amazing', having swapped her crab-heavy diet for healthy alternatives, and has taken up daily exercise including jogging and walking.

Before, she would eat meals like poached egg on toast, sandwiches, pizzas and snacks such as crisps, biscuits, yoghurts, large bars of chocolate and even her children's leftovers.

Now, however, she has a meal replacement shake for breakfast, homemade soup for lunch and a jacket potato or chicken salad for dinner, snacking only on fruit.

"I went from eating two sandwiches at lunch to having healthy soups and salads and actually exercising," Sarah said.

"I started jogging on the spot each day for 10 minutes and gradually built it up.

"Now I can jog for an hour on the treadmill."

Not only does Sarah finally feel 'happy' and 'healthy', Sarah's diabetes has also reversed.

"My son keeps giving me a hug and saying: 'I can get my arms around you now mummy'," she added.

"I'm glowing now."
