Clock Collector Has To Set His 5,000 Clocks Back An Hour

It's going to take him five hours to put the hour back on all his clocks

If you're waking up this morning feeling a bit more refreshed having spent an extra hour in bed, spare a thought clock collector Roy West, who will now have to set every single one of his 5,000 timepieces back an hour.

Yep, the 75-year-old from Hampshire owns a whole heap of clocks, all which must be adjusted to get back in sync with Greenwich Mean Time.

He's been collecting the clocks for nearly 40 years and has to spend five hours fiddling with them every time the clocks go back or forward.

There are so many of them that they completely cover the walls of the flat he shares with his wife Pauline, 68.

Roy has a whopping 5,000 clocks which need to be adjusted to Greenwich Mean Time.

Oh, and 25 of them chime every 15 minutes. That's four times per hour, 24 hours per day.

You'd have to really like clocks for that not to get right on your nerves.

Anyway, Roy really likes clocks. So much so that he's got 30 - yes, 30 - by his bedside. He's got no excuse for missing his alarm call, that's for sure.

While adjusting them all to fit with GMT every half-year is a bit of a slog, it's something Roy wouldn't change for the world.

Twenty-five of Roy's clocks chime every 15 minutes.

He said: "It's a long job but I don't mind. I don't want any telling the wrong time.

"I start in the bedroom, because I have the most in there. That takes an hour and a half.

"I then go into the living room and that takes an hour, then the hallway, kitchen, bathroom and the cupboards. Finally I do the spare room, which takes another hour."

Roy began collecting clocks because he was annoyed that his boss chucked out a perfectly functional clock.

Roy says you 'get used to' the ticking and chiming.

He explained: "All of a sudden I started looking around charity shops, picking up clocks and buying them.

"Pauline brings home a new pack of batteries every time she goes to the shops."

As for the ticking and chiming, he added: "You get used to it."

You'd have to.

Roy has 60 clocks in his bathroom.

This is all very impressive, but - looking at it - you do have to wonder where you'd put a cup of tea down. Literally every single surface is covered in clocks.

He's got clocks in the cupboards, clocks on the sideboard, you name it. Imagine having 60 clocks in your bathroom. Roy doesn't have to.

Well, at least he's got a hobby that he cares about.
