Heading to America in the next couple of months and want to avoid spending hours queuing up at immigration?
Then this travel hack may be just the thing you're looking for.
Anyone who's travelled to the US knows that it makes queues at EU borders look like a piece of cake. From ESTA applications to intense security screenings and tourists being caught up in recent immigration clampdowns, heading to North America for a holiday can appear daunting at the best of times.
And it's likely to get even more chaotic with the arrival of the 2026 World Cup.

So no one can blame you for wanting to make the process as smooth as possible, and thankfully, there's a way travellers from certain destinations can streamline their arrival to the US.
Enter TSA preclearance.

What is TSA preclearance?
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checks are the main security screenings which travellers heading to the United States have to go through.
This can mean queueing up for well over an hour after touching down to get your passport checked, which is the last thing you want after a long-haul flight.
Fortunately, the US Department of Homeland Security offers TSA preclearance for tourists flying from select destinations, saving you time upon arrival.
Here are all the locations in which TSA preclearance is available:
- Canada (including Toronto, Ottawa, and Vancouver)
- Ireland (Dublin and Shannon)
- United Arab Emirates (Abu Dhabi)
- The Caribbean (Bahamas, Bermuda and Aruba)
For Brits heading Stateside, this means a connection in either Dublin or Shannon will allow you to take advantage of TSA preclearance.
What do you need for TSA preclearance?
Dublin Airport has handy guidance on how to use TSA preclearance, advising passengers to check in with their airline as normal and head for checks when prompted by the flight departure board.

The airport advises passengers to head for clearance checks in good time, particularly during peak hours.
It's also crucial to make sure that your ESTA has been granted, as boarding will otherwise be prohibited.
Is TSA preclearance worth it?
Yes, especially if you want to avoid being grilled by the US border patrol fresh off a seven-plus hour flight.
This is exactly what British holidaymaker Tom Earnshaw found when he flew to Nashville via Dublin in February this year with his wife.
"Instead of waiting potentially hours alongside other international arrivals at the airport you’re flying into, you can quite literally be through TSA clearance in a matter of minutes. " Tom, who works for LADbible, recalled of his recent trip to the US.
"[We] walked out of Nashville International Airport as if we were American citizens."
He went on to add that the preclearance process was straightforward and took a matter of minutes, rather than the hour-long wait he experienced when flying to Newark, New Jersey, from London.

"I’m going back to the States later this year, with a connection via Dublin," he added. "I don’t think we’d do it any other way going forward, especially given it’s also often cheaper to connect in Ireland than to go direct.
"Travel days are hard enough, and avoiding these kinds of gruelling encounters is worth your time."
