The 'Gate of the Gods' has remained a mysterious structure ever since it was discovered in Peru in 1996.

Local tour guide Jose Luis Delgado Mamani was exploring the area when he came across a structure carved into red sandstone, resembling a doorway he had repeatedly seen in his dreams, according to The Daily Mail.

It was about seven meters (23 feet) high and wide, with a smaller alcove at the bottom. Mamani noticed that there was a slot at the centre of the alcove, which some believe was meant to hold a special object or key.

Also known as Puerta de Hayu Marca or Aramu Muru, the site dates back to 200 BC to 1,000 AD, and has caused intrigue amongst locals and tourists.

Legend has it that the doorway might be a portal to another world, which theorists believe opens up to the 'possibility' of aliens. Any excuse to get aliens involved, it seems.

One tale in particular speaks of an Incan priest named Aramu Muru, who fled from Spanish conquerors with a sacred golden disk called the 'Key of the Gods of the Seven Rays'.

He is said to have placed this disk into the circular slot, which would open the door to emit a sort of blue light.

It is claimed that Aramu then entered the portal, and was never to be seen again.

Another possible 'explanation' has been projected by Dr Mohammad Firoz Khan, who according to the Metro, tweeted: "Native American legends portray the Gate of the Gods as a portal through which heroes met their gods, gaining immortality.

"Visitors flock to the site, drawn by its rumoured supernatural energy and claims of being a gateway to other dimensions."

He added: "Despite the lack of concrete evidence and no further excavations since its discovery, Aramu Muru remains a protected archaeological site, captivating tourists and spiritual seekers alike with its mysterious allure and historical significance."

Meanwhile, the Aymara people, from 1150 to 1477, supposedly knew of the structure and called it the ‘Devil’s Doorway’.

Ufologist Giorgio Tsoukalos gave his take on the topic during an episode of History Channel show Ancient Aliens.

In a passionate rant, he insisted: "We’re all led to believe that it’s all coincidence, it’s all just fantasy. Rubbish!

"Something happened.

"It is possible that this sun disc had some type of an extraterrestrial connection.

"And that this was a technological device with which to travel."

However, according to The Daily Mail, some experts believe the 'doorway' to be for a more functional purpose, or perhaps they just liked the design.
