Ryan Reynolds holds talks with Hollywood friend Natalie Portman about Wrexham

Ryan Reynolds holds talks with Hollywood friend Natalie Portman about Wrexham

He's spoken to his fellow A-list star about a possible match for the women's side

Ryan Reynolds reached out to fellow Hollywood star Natalie Portman to talk about a possible game plan for Wrexham FC’s women's side.

While the men’s side recently celebrated their promotion to the football league - the first time they've managed to do so in 15 years - the women’s side has also had an impressive year winning the Adran North championship trophy in March, and also had their own promotion to the Adran Premier.

So it's been a successful year all ‘round for A-list owners Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, who recently flew the men's team out to Las Vegas to celebrate their promotion.

Although the duo are currently flying high from their club’s success, they’re not the only high-profile stars to own a football club.

Thor star Portman is also a founder member and stakeholder of the California based women’s side, Angel City FC, while fellow celebrities Serena Williams and Eva Longoria are also invested in the team.

And Portman has recently revealed that Reynolds has reached out to her about setting up a friendly match between the two sides.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, she said: “I've been lucky enough to talk to him about his journey, and he's so inspirational for what he's done with Wrexham, and they have a women's team also.

"So, we have talked about kind of having some friendly matches at some point."

Much like Reynolds and McElhenney with their Welcome to Wrexham documentary, Portman is also set to star in docuseries Angel City, which will centre on the rise of the Los Angeles-based professional women's soccer team.

Commenting on her team’s success, she added: "It was incredible to get the support from all of those friends and it was, it was really moving when people came on board, because it wasn't obvious, and we got a lot of no's before we got yes'.

"And I feel like I didn't realise what a big lift it was, and that might have stopped me from doing it if I understood how hard it was going to be.

"I feel lucky that I had that kind of ignorance or optimism that, of course, this will all work out. I believed in it so much. I believed in it because these players are the best players in the world, and it's the most popular sport in the world and I thought, 'there's no way that you don't provide greater accessibility, and this isn't the biggest hit.'"

Angel City kicks off on HBO Max on 16 May.
