Wrexham fan with terminal cancer meets idol Ryan Reynolds in most expensive Bucket List wish

Jay Fear was diagnosed with terminal appendix cancer in January

A Wrexham fan with terminal appendix cancer got to meet his idol Ryan Reynolds who presented him with a bucket list gift.

Jay Fear became a fan of the Welsh club after watching Disney+ documentary Welcome to Wrexham, which gave us an insight into the shock take-over by Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

On Saturday (22 April), the 45-year-old from Southampton was granted his dying wish to watch the team live and witnessed Wrexham win promotion back to the Football League after a 15-year absence.

Ryan Reynolds posed for photographs with Jay Fear, his wife Deb, son Sam, 16, and daughter Jess, 18.

Fear, who was diagnosed in January, was also able to have a lengthy chat with Deadpool star, Reynolds.

"They always say you should never meet your idol and this guy is definitely an exception to that," Fear told BBC 5 Live's Sunday Breakfast.

Reynolds said: "It was amazing to meet Jay. I wonder if I'd have the same unwavering joy if our roles were reversed.

"He is an exceptional person and his family is wonderful. I got a little choked up talking to him and feeling how much his kids and wife are going to miss him."

Reynolds gifted Fear a signed glove used in Deadpool 2 and arranged for him to visit the set for the series' third film.

Bucket List Wishes, who helped arrange the meeting, said: "This wish is the hardest, took the most amount of volunteer hours and cost the most in almost ten years of us granting wishes."

Paul Mullin’s brilliant brace fired them to a 3-1 win over Boreham Wood.

Fear told Reynolds: "I really hope I'm going to be about to get to see Deadpool 3 when it comes out.

"He went 'well, we're filming in six weeks so why don't we get you guys up to London. Yeah, let's make that happen'.

"I was like.... 'please'."

Fear added: "People might think this whole thing was for me.

"Actually, this is for [my family] because they are the ones that are going to remember what happened for the rest of their lives.

"I just hope this is a core memory that they'll never forget."

Reynolds has also been pictured with Caleb Webb, nine, who suffers with Crohn’s Disease.

Caleb’s mum Stacey, 35, who also has the condition, said: “It is not the first time he [Ryan] has done it.

“I would say nine times out of ten he will always come over to the disabled section where the kids are.

“He will come and say hello and have a chat with them. Most of the kids don’t understand he is a famous Hollywood actor. They just see him as a friend.

"The first time he came over to Caleb he said ‘hello little man’ and bent down and chatted to him.”

She added: “He [Ryan] really does care. He puts everyone before himself. He has got a heart of gold and he really cares for the kids.

“Caleb just thinks him and Ryan are best mates now. He was the mascot in March and the club treated him like royalty.”
