It only seems like a few months since Apple announced its latest model of iPhone but we're officially expected to get the iPhone 18 at a September event.
And while there is always likely to be a few tweaks and improvements with each model, there are strong rumours that we might get something truly game-changing later this year.
Naturally, the way in which technology has developed over the past decade means that even some of Apple's most popular devices are now considered to be 'obsolete', while the regular iOS updates often leave folks feeling a little frustrated, especially when the battery mysteriously loses all its power.
But alongside the possibility of a folded phone and a different camera design, there is a real chance that we might finally get the potentially life-saving addition of 5G via satellite.

Since a lot of humanity has almost zero survival instinct, we've probably all found ourselves in the situation where we're out in the wilderness with no idea where we're going, with Google Maps refusing to load as we scramble for any sort of signal. Hell, it happened to me at the weekend.
This new addition is expected to debut in the iPhone 18 model and it's all thanks to something known as a C2 modem, which will also likely provide enhanced privacy as well as improved efficiency and speed.
Personally, the first thing that comes to mind when you're wanting to use the internet in areas with no signal is when you're lost in the hills and need a way home, but I'm sure there are some people who would love the ability to stream videos or TV when they're in the middle of nowhere as well, and it seems as if that will be an option, so long as they're willing to pay for a significant or unlimited data plan when buying the phone.
Apple focused publication 9to5mac wrote: “The new technology could enable iPhone 18 Pro to automatically fall back to a satellite connection when cell coverage is poor. If iPhone 18 Pro makes satellite connectivity that easy and seamless, it could turn what’s currently a niche feature into an everyday benefit.”

Given that Apple previously suggested that its C1X modem is up to twice as fast as the C1 modem, and the most power-efficient modem in an iPhone ever, this will surely only improve further when the C2 modem is introduced in the new models.
These rumours will undoubtedly get fans excited ahead of the likely announcement in September, with the annual Apple event always building anticipation among fans who want to get their hands on the latest design.
However, if you do want to buy the new design, it's likely that you'll have to splash over £1000 for the privilege, considering the iPhone 17 air was priced at £999 when it was released late last year.
