A restaurateur in France has made a record-breaking pizza topped with 257 different varieties of cheese.

Benedict Bruel, the manager of Déliss' Pizza in Lyon, constructed the cheesy creation on Saturday 22 February with the express intention of breaking the world record.

This previous record was set in Melbourne, Australia, in September 2018 by Johnny Di Francesco, who made a pizza with 154 different types of cheese.

Describing his home nation as a 'country of cheese', Benedict thought it only right that he not only broke, but obliterated the record.

According to Actu, he said: "I told myself that we, the French, with our country of cheese, we could easily put 100 more... We couldn't even see the tomato sauce anymore."

Keen to be officially recognised as the new record-holder, Benedict did his research and made sure the pizza complied with the Guinness World Records requirements.

He said: "The pizza had to be 30 centimetres wide and there should be at least two to four grams of different cheeses."

But even in France, it wasn't easy for the 41-year-old to get his hands on so many different cheeses.

He said: "People laughed when I went to the checkout several times with about 60 cheeses."

Having visited numerous supermarkets, Benedict topped up his cheese collection with visits to dairies in Beaujolais and Mornant, spending a total of almost €1,000 (£869.55).

It took more than two hours to make the pizza and Benedict says it actually turned out to be pretty nice - though you won't be surprised to hear that 'a small piece is enough'.

He said: "[With] the time to unpack the cheeses and shape the dough, the making of the pizza lasted almost two hours and 20 minutes.

"People think it's sickening, but it's not. It is a pizza made for several people, a small piece is enough to appreciate. For the aperitif, it's perfect."

Benedict spent a looooot of money on cheese.

A Guinness World Records spokesperson told LADbible it had received the record application and is pending the necessary evidence.

She said: "We are currently pending evidence from the applicant. Once we have received the required evidence, our records team will begin to investigate whether the attempt has met the guidelines and achieved the record title."

In the meantime, Benedict plans on creating more of the 257-cheese pizzas, as he still has plenty of each variety left over.

He said: "There is still enough to make thirty pizzas like this."

According to Skyscanner, you can fly from London to Lyon tomorrow for £49. Just saying.
