The Cast For 'What We Do In The Shadows'' US TV Spin Off Looks Awesome

The Cast For 'What We Do In The Shadows'' US TV Spin Off Looks Awesome

Featuring some of the UK's best off-beat comic talent, this looks set to be a winner.

When What We Do In The Shadows hit screens in 2014 it brought with it affirmation that it's actually still possible to make a vampire film that doesn't suck balls harder than Dracula sucked blood.

The Kiwi horror comedy mockumentary, written by the Flight Of The Conchords guys, followed the lives of a group of vampire flatmates living in Wellington and struggling to adapt to modern life.

The movie was met with critical acclaim, has already had a sequel (We're Wolves) and a New Zealand TV spin-off (Wellington Paranormal). But now US channel FX has picked up an American spin-off version for a production pilot and the cast looks very promising indeed.

Stars and directors of the 2014 film, Jemaine Clement (who you'll know from FOTC) and Taika Waititi (who you probably spotted in Thor: Ragnarok), will serve as executive producers, with Clement as writer and Waititi as director.

But that's not all, the cast will feature some of the UK's favourite names in off-beat comedy, including Matt Berry (the guy with the voice, from The IT Crowd, Toast Of London and The Mighty Boosh), Kayvan Novak (Fonejacker, Facejacker and Three Lions) and Natasia Demetriou (writer for The Midnight Beast).

So far, the only American name announced has been Harvey Guillen, who is probably best known for his role in the Nickelodeon series The Thundermans.

There's not much info plot-wise yet, but the line-up definitely looks promising and, come to think about it, it's a bit of a travesty that it has taken until now for Matt Berry to be given a role as a vampire.

Timelines and specifics are still up in the air, too, but we do know that the show will comprise of half-hour episodes and be set in the US, as opposed to New Zealand.

What We Do In The Shadows was a roaring success, but it did that a while for the writing team to settle on the idea of vampires.

Speaking to Empire Online, Clement explained their thought process.

"When we first suggested the idea we were like, 'Ah vampires? That's pretty '70s!' And after a while we were like, 'Ah vampires are cool now' and then 'Ah vampires, yeah!' Then people started rolling their eyes when you mentioned what you were doing. And eventually it was late enough that people were ready to make fun of vampires."

We could be waiting a while for the new series to hit screens, but if track records are anything to go by, then you can bet it will be more than worth it.
