Miley Cyrus has revealed she decided to go sober because she feared dying at 27 - having become determined not to join the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Amy Winehouse and Kurt Cobain in the tragedy of premature death.

Cyrus, who turned 28 on 23 November, admitted it was the so-called '27 Club' that helped push her to give up drugs and alcohol, with many of the musicians in the notional group thought to have suffered at the hands of their high-risk lifestyles.

Speaking to Zane Lowe in a new interview for Apple Music, Cyrus said: "27 to me was a year that I really had to protect myself. That actually really made me want to get sober was because we've lost so many icons at 27. It's a very pivotal time. You go into that next chapter or this is it for you.

"I just feel that some of the artists that almost couldn't handle their own power and their own energy and their own force. It's an energy. I, no matter what, was born with that."

Cyrus continued to say that the pandemic had produced something of a speed bump in her sobriety, saying she'd been sober for a fortnight at the time of the interview after she 'fell off' the wagon.

The star continued: "Well, I, like a lot of people, being completely honest, during the pandemic, fell off and felt really a lot of... and I would never sit here and go, 'I've been f***ing sober.'

"I fell off and I realised that I now am back on sobriety, two weeks sober, and I feel like I really accepted that time."

Cyrus stressed that others in a similar situation shouldn't be too hard on themselves, adding: "One of the things I've used is, 'don't get furious, get curious'.

"So don't be mad at yourself, but ask yourself, 'What happened?'"

Elsewhere in the interview, Cyrus also discussed her seventh studio album, Plastic Hearts, which saw her explore a new sound and major themes of love and loss.

For the new record, which is released on 27 November, she also teamed up with the likes of Joan Jett, Dua Lipa, Billy Idol and Stevie Nicks.
