It's just over a month until Halloween, the annual fright fest that sees kids (and big kids) across the globe go trick-or-treating, scoop out the flesh of pumpkins and cutting spooky faces into them, dress up in weird, homemade costumes and generally just get a bit hyper on sugar.

But while 31 October can often get a bit overshadowed by all the novelty tat, there are some people that know how to keep things classic.

That includes, it seems, bosses of popular 80s-set sitcom The Goldbergs, who have roped in a genuine Halloween icon for their special episode next month.

They revealed the big news on Twitter, writing: "Halloween episode this year is going to be a NIGHTMARE! @RobertBEnglund will guest star as the one and only Freddy Krueger!"

Any good film fan will know that Englund is, of course, the man who portrayed infamous serial killer Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street slasher film series, the first of which was released in 1984.

Naturally, it sent lovers of both The Goldbergs and Freddy Krueger into overdrive on Twitter, with one writing excitedly: "This is gonna rule! Robert Englund is a legend!"

Another commented: "If this doesn't make Hollywood realize that NO ONE can portray Freddy Krueger better than Robert Englund, nothing will. Iconic & timeless. I love this & can't wait. The Goldbergs just gets better & better."

Someone else said: "Honestly, what is scarier: Freddy Krueger coming at you with his clawed glove or Beverly Goldberg smothering you with a lot of hugs? I guess we'll see on The Goldbergs Halloween episode. I can't wait."

It's not the first time the show has welcomed a cult icon for a cameo. In season five, Rick Moranis made a surprise appearance, reprising his role from the movie Spaceballs, while Chuck Norris cropped up - voice only, sadly - to read a letter to barry in the third series.

There's also been Charlie Sheen, Weird Al Yankovic and Weird Science star Ilan Mitchell-Smith, to name just a handful.

Something tells us, though, that Robert Englund's appearance as the legendary Freddy Krueger might just be the show's best trick yet. We can't wait!
