Colin Farrell has been spotted in character as Penguin as filming for The Batman gets underway in Liverpool.

The Hollywood star looked unrecognisable as he stood alongside Robert Pattinson (Bruce Wayne/Batman) and Zoe Kravitz (Selina Kyle/Catwoman) filming what appeared to be a funeral scene.

Fans were given their first glimpse of Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin back in August when the trailer dropped, but these new images show how extreme the transformation is with prosthetics and a wig completely changing the actor's looks.

Filming for the new flick kicked off outside St George's Hall in Liverpool, following the recent announcement that film's release date has been put back to 2022 due to the coronavirus.

In an interview with GMA News, Farrell revealed he was itching to back to filming, saying: "I had only started it and I can't wait to get back. The creation of it, the aesthetic of the character, has been fun and I really am so excited to get back and explore it.

"And I haven't got that much to do. I have a certain amount in the film. I am not all over it by any means. But there are a couple of some tasty scenes I have in it and my creation and I can't wait to get back.

"Yeah, I totally feel like it is something that I have not had the opportunity to explore before. It feels original and fun. But I am only at the start of the journey so I can't wait to get back and really get into it."

This will be the first time the notorious villain has appeared on the big screen since he was played by Danny DeVito in Batman Returns in 1992.

And it seems as though DeVito is more than happy to pass the baton to Farrell, with the actor telling Collider: "I haven't spoken to him since, but I'm really looking forward to it. I think that no matter what, he's gonna be great because he's a great actor.

"The only thing he has to worry about is that Oswald Cobblepot will show up at his house..." before making his classic Penguin grunt.

The Batman lands in cinemas on 4 March 2022.
