After five seasons The Boys has come to an end, many fans are questioning why certain characters did not appear in the final season.
The Boys season five is full of surprises, with cameos from major celebrities such as Seth Rogen, who appeared in an episode as himself, and Samuel L Jackson, who voiced a shark during a scene with The Deep after Eric Kripke found out the Pulp Fiction actor was a big fan of the show.
One surprise that many fans of The Boys were probably waiting for which never came however, is the reappearance of Queen Maeve, the Wonder-Woman like superhero character played by Dominique McElligot.
Maeve is presumed dead in-universe after the season three finale where she is depowered in a fight with Soldier Boy.

She actually survives, going into hiding with her partner Elena, and is never seen again on the show.
In season five however it is hinted that she might be returning, though she never does, and the reason has finally been revealed.
Dominique McElligot disappeared from Hollywood after season three
McElligot has acted in nothing since the finale of The Boys season three, which released in 2022.
Prior to that she hadn’t acted in anything outside of the The Boys universe since 2019 when she appeared in the film Two/One alongside Boyd Holbrook.
Add to that the fact that she hasn’t posted on Instagram since June 2024, and has made very rare public appearances at just a few Comic-Cons since then, and she has effectively disappeared from Hollywood.
Eric Kripke revealed that McElligot has retired from acting altogether in a new interview

When asked whether he tried to have Maeve cameo in season five of The Boys Kripke gave a frank response, telling Gold Derby: “I would have loved to have had Maeve. I was in conversation with Dom. We still email once in a while.”
He continued, explaining that she is ‘mostly retired from acting’, adding: “Her schedule didn't work out. It was all a very friendly, non-controversial thing.
“I was like, ‘If we wrote it, would you do it?’ And she's like, ‘I'm kind of out of it, and I'm busy, and unfortunately I can't, but send everyone my love.’ That was sort of it.”
He gave more information to TV Insider, saying: “Dom and I email a couple of times every six to eight months or so, and she checked in on me after the Palisades.”

He reiterated that he had asked but that it was ‘non-controversial’, adding regarding references to Maeve in season five: “We wanted to pay homage to her; she's an important character, and so she shows up in the recap and in a way to show that Maeve passed the torch to Annie (Starlight), and now Annie is passing the torch to Marie (Moreau, the star of Gen V) and that there's this lineage of strong women that started with Maeve.
“We wanted to bring up Maeve’s spirit if we couldn’t actually bring her up in person.”
