X-rated meaning behind clothing designs you might see on spicy cruises as 'rules explained'

When embarking on a spicy swinger cruise, you might notice that the dress code isn't all about fashion.

Many clothing designs feature symbols and hidden meanings that suggest what that passenger might be in to.

Although these cruises are private, customers on board will have varying levels of openness to adult activities, and what they wear is said to hint at exactly that.

Unspoken etiquette is a familiar thing on swingers cruises and signalling is a big part of that.

From the pineapple signal, the most well-known symbol amongst swingers, or the flamingo symbol, there are all sorts of ways passengers on adult-themed cruises like to operate, all under a unique set of rules.

If you're looking for a sneak peak into the spicy cruise scene, or even want to give it a go yourself, here are some common items and guidelines that are worth knowing before you set sail.

Just warning you though, the rules on board are actually pretty strict.

Pineapple symbol

Pineapples, specifically the upside-down one, is often seen on clothing, luggage tags or even jewellery.

It usually means that someone is actively looking to meet other like-minded couples.

On board, you'll notice tropical shirts, hats and swimwear covered in pineapples.

If you see someone with a right-side-up pineapple, that might just mean that they are a fan of the fruit.

Flamingo symbol

The cheeky flamingo signal is again seen on swimwear, general clothing and decorated on doors.

Thought to be not as direct as the pineapple, it gives a subtle nod the other passengers on board that they're open to the lifestyle.

"That said flamingos are less well known as a secret code than the ubiquitous upside-down pineapple - so if your intention is to, well grab some attention from like minded swingers, then you might want to stick with the fruit," adds Cruise Lowdown.

Black ring meaning

So apparently, wearing a black ring on the middle finger of your right hand is supposed to hint that you're into the lifestyle of a swinger.

It signals to others that you're 'in the know' without being as loud as a massive pineapple on your t shirt.

On spicy cruises, you might see many guests casually wearing black rings during mixers, or around the pool.

General spicy cruise rules

These adult-themed cruises, although unique, are all about consent and following the rules.

Consent is key

As always, nothing happens without clear consent from all parties.

Dress appropriately

Temptation Cruises notes: "For the comfort of all guests, we ask that you use the appropriate attire in all other public areas, including dining facilities."

No photography

Temptation adds that 'some guests may want to keep their identities private', so photography without permission isn't allowed.

"Due to the unique concept of our resort, we ask that when taking photos and / or video, you only do selfies and close-ups for personal use, no wide angles," the holiday provider says.

No drugs

There is a complete ban of drugs on board.
