It looks like Amsterdam the cat isn't rolling with the 'new year, new me' motto

A pot-bellied Sphynx cat was recorded by his owner in a hilarious video, which has since gone viral:

With Christmas over and most of us having gorged ourselves (rightfully so) over December, the new year can be a tough reality check. So you wouldn't be alone if you almost felt on the same page as this rather large, fur-less LAD.

The funny footage was filmed by Jana Martinka of her bald six-year-old Sphynx cat Amsterdam, who has become everyone's January spirit animal. Jana's original post has racked up more than 34,000 likes on Instagram.

Amsterdam really is a photogenic ol' feline.

Jana filmed the chunky feline in her home in Vienna, Austria, as the rotund Amsterdam sat up like a human, with his large bald belly and rolls hanging out for all to see. The footage also shows three-year-old Neytiri, a fellow Sphynx cat, laying down and looking up at her 7.5kg chubby hubby.

Jana said: "I thought it was very funny but also very special for me to see them like this. The reason why he was sitting like this is because there is an infrared heater on the wall and the cats love to sleep there."

Who knows, maybe Amsterdam is just following the same ritual that an Ethiopian tribe have where they compete to put on weight - AKA, the dream.

The contest forms part of the Ka'el ritual which is held to mark the New Year. Each family presents its unmarried man for the challenge - a little Hunger Games-esque - who then knows his fate for the next half year.

Picking apart the tradition, photographer Eric Lafforgue explained: "The cows are sacred to the Bodi tribe so they are not killed. The blood is taken by making a hole in a vein with a spear or an axe, and after that, they will close with clay.

"The fat men drink milk and blood all day long. The first bowl of blood is drunk at sunrise. The man must drink it quickly before it coagulates, but some cannot drink everything and vomit."

Six months later and the big day arrives. They cover themselves in clay and ashes before emerging from their hut.

OK, so Amsterdam the kitty hasn't gone to these lengths. Not yet anyway. Watch this space.
