Will Smith has revealed his marriage to Jada Pinkett Smith is 'open'.

Last year, Pinkett's relationship with rapper August Alsina made headlines, after he claimed he had Smith's permission.

On her Red Table Talk web show, Pinkett confirmed that she had had 'an entanglement' with Alsina.

The couple, who have been married since 1997, said they had been on the rocks and that they had 'basically broken up' at the time.

She said: As time went on, I got into a different type of entanglement with August.

"The only person that can give permission in that circumstance is myself.

"But what August was probably trying to communicate because I could see how he could see it as permission because we were separated amicably, and I think he wanted to make it clear he's not a homewrecker because he's not."

Now, Smith has revealed that he and his wife have an open relationship, and that although most attention was paid to Pinkett and Alsina, they have both had sex with other people during their marriage.

In an interview with GQ, the actor says their relationship started out as monogamous but that they were 'both miserable and clearly something had to change' so they decided to have an open marriage.

Jada admitted she had 'an entanglement' with rapper August Alsina.

He told the publication: "Jada never believed in conventional marriage. Jada had family members that had an unconventional relationship. So she grew up in a way that was very different than how I grew up.

"There were significant endless discussions about, what is relational perfection? What is the perfect way to interact as a couple? And for the large part of our relationship, monogamy was what we chose, not thinking of monogamy as the only relational perfection."

He went on to explain that while their unconventional set up might not work for everyone, it's the perfect fit for them.

"We have given each other trust and freedom, with the belief that everybody has to find their own way," he added.

"And marriage for us can't be a prison.

"And I don't suggest our road for anybody. I don't suggest this road for anybody. But the experiences that the freedoms that we've given one another and the unconditional support, to me, is the highest definition of love."
