A doctor has revealed the best time of day for one to... pleasure themselves.

It's the age-old question for some, how often should you tug the turkey?

While the stigma around masturbation has widely faded in the past few years, it's still a hot topic of conversation, as health experts have started to weigh in on it.

After being taboo for so long, people would be forgiven for wanting to find out more on the topic now that it's fair game and all.

That's when questions circle around about when the 'normal' time of day to do it is, or how frequently can you do it without it becoming weird.

Well, wonder no more, as The Handy have come in to provide some professional insight, courtesy of Dr Sham Singh.

A survey from the website revealed than over 40 percent of people use sex toys at least once a week, while women (55 percent) are more likely than men (36 percent) to use them regularly.

But there's more on the frequency and health benefits of the act of masturbating itself, according to Dr Singh.

Daily masturbation isn't unhealthy

He explained: “Masturbation is a common and healthy part of human sexuality. However, how much you want to masturbate varies from one individual to another, depending upon his or her overall lifestyle, personal relationships, and state of mind."

“But in general terms, for most individuals, a few sessions of daily masturbation does not go out of the ordinary at all in terms of being healthy and average,” Dr Singh added.

Masturbating in the morning can be an energy boost

Explaining the significance of timing, he revealed: “There isn't a certain time of day that’s better than any other, so it’s better for people to find their 'ideal' time that suits them.”

But it turns out that there are benefits to masturbating at certain times in the day, depending on what you're looking to achieve.

“For example, some might find it easier to sleep after masturbation at night because of the hormones released, which can help bring on relaxation. Others might prefer to do it in the morning because they find it energising.” Dr Singh said.

Masturbation could improve sleep and relieve stress

The doctor explained that there are 'numerous psychological and physical advantages' to the act.

Dr Singh explained: “When it comes to physical aspects, it can relieve muscle tension, help to improve the state of sleep, and even relieve premenstrual tension caused by menstruation.”

“It may also be understood as a minor psychological and stress-relieving exercise. Exploring one's body and preferences can also enable better communication and satisfaction in sexual relationships,” he added as a mental health bonus.

“Looking into the science of it, masturbating can stimulate the release of endorphins and other happy neurotransmitters that may include dopamine and oxytocin, thus increasing mood and reducing anxiety.”

Masturbation can help relieve menstrual pain

Focusing on one of the points he made, the medical professional highlighted: “Most women find that masturbating at this time can help alleviate menstrual discomfort.

"The contractions of the uterus as a result of an orgasm are then followed by relaxation, which can relieve cramping.”

However, he did point out that everyone's body is different, and to listen to what your body needs.
