An 11-year-old girl has become the UK's youngest mum after she gave birth in a hospital.

The Sun reports the girl became pregnant at the tender age of 10 an had her baby delivered earlier this month after more than 30 weeks.

Thankfully, both mum and baby are healthy and doing well.

Social services and local authorities are now investigating how the girl became pregnant and her family were completely in the dark about it. They had no clue the young girl was pregnant or even sexually active and everyone is hoping to get to the bottom of how this happened.

A person close to the family has told the British newspaper: "It has come as a big shock. She's now being surrounded by expert help. The main thing is that she and the baby are OK. There are questions around why people did not know. That is very worrying."

A doctor says this is likely the youngest known person to give birth in the UK and has topped the previous record holder, who became a mum at 12 back in 2006.

Doctor Carol Cooper said: "This is the youngest mother I've heard of. The average age at which a girl begins puberty is 11, though it can be anytime between eight and 14, or younger. Weight affects many hormones.

"There's a higher risk of a low-birth weight baby, pre-eclampsia, premature labour and many infections.

"Around one in every 2,500 births happens to someone who doesn't know she's pregnant (or has hidden it)."

Tressa Middleton got pregnant after being raped by her then 16-year-old brother Jason. The girl was 'born into a life of poverty and neglect' and explained how her older sibling could change moods at the drop of a hat.

Tressa was so horrified by what happened, she couldn't tell her mum about the pregnancy.

She told ITV's This Morning: "Soon after I began noticing changes in my body. I eventually did a pregnancy test and it came up I was pregnant. I was too scared to tell my mum, so I told my aunt and then ran away.

"Mum was furious but she calmed down eventually."

Tressa told her family that the pregnancy was the result of a drunken hook up with a teenage boy. Two years later, she finally confessed it was Jason and he was sentenced to four years behind bars.

The teen was forced to give up her child for adoption.
