McDonald’s is making a big shift to get more plastic out of their supply chain by getting rid of the famous plastic McFlurry spoon. Here's a video that the company shared announcing the move.

Next to the video announcing their decision, the fast food giant wrote: “That's right, we're cancelling plastic cutlery and replacing it with a new sustainable, paper-based material in all of our restaurants in the UK & Ireland.

“We're doing this to remove over 850 tonnes of plastic from our supply chain a year, as part of our Plan for Change.”

The spoons used to make the McFlurry have become something of an icon around McDonald’s restaurants.

Well, those with working McFlurry machines, anyway.

The hollow end on the piece of cutlery means that it can be attached to the machine in order to help mix up the ice cream and the topping, which – when you think about it – really makes the McFlurry what it is.

However, any efforts to make the world a better place have to be applauded, and Maccies have obviously come up with something a bit more sustainable that works just as well as the plastic ones, otherwise they wouldn’t have announced the move.

Whilst we’re not entirely sure what that is, the likelihood is that it won’t affect your enjoyment of a McFlurry.

Hell, they have managed to get rid of a whole heap of plastic products in recent times, as have many companies, and it hasn’t really been that big a deal, has it?

So, it’s going to be just the same for us, and there’ll be less plastic going into bins, which then goes into landfills, which then refuses to degrade for hundreds of years or ended up lodged inside some animal or other.

Everyone is a winner, that’s the truth.

It seems as if some folks have already had the chance to try out the new cutlery, with one person commenting: “I prefer the new spoons and my little girl asked if we could keep it until I explained they wouldn’t do well washing up,

“Well done McDonald’s.”

Now, the McFlurry spoon will be made out of paper.

A second said: “Used a cardboard spoon for my McFlurry the other day and it was loads better.”

Obviously, not everyone is mad about it – some have complained that the spoons and straws go soggy after a bit.

However, there’s an answer for that, as one person suggested: “Don't know why everyones [sic] complaining, just scoop it up with a chicken nugget and eat it like every other normal person”

It's certainly an option...
