Ex-Marine, 62, Beats Guinness World Planking Record

A former US Marine has set a new Guinness World Record for holding The Longest Male Abdominal Plank.

If you've ever done a plank, you'll know the severe pain that hits your core around the 30-second to one-minute mark.

But George Hood managed to hold his plank for a whopping eight hours, 15 minutes and 15 seconds.

Just sit there and imagine what that would be like. That's the equivalent of walking into work and holding a plank for the entire day and then collapsing to the ground shortly after you're meant to finish.

The former record was held by Mao Weidong in China in 2016, who held his plank for a very impressive eight hours and one minute.

George's competition was held under the motto 'break the plan, break the stigma', to bring awareness to and support mental health and wellness.

You're probably asking yourself how one would prepare for a record-breaking plank like this. Do you just keep holding planks for as long as possible until you break, hopefully getting longer each time? Do you do a million and one sit-ups every day to get a core of steel?

Mr Hood says he logged around 2,100 hours worth of planking to prepare for the event.

But, just to show off after he clinched the record, the former US Marine did a casual 75 push-ups non-stop, according to the BBC. Doing that many push-ups would be difficult in its own right, let alone after holding a plank for more than eight hours.

He announced his retirement from setting planking records shortly after being presented with his Guinness Book of Records certificate.

Speaking to the BBC, George said that an enormous amount of mental preparation is needed to complete something like this. He added that it also helps to have some old school rock and roll music playing.

"I have to totally disassociate myself from the reality of the clock. It's an art and a skillset that I have mastered over the years," he said.

"When I was growing up, I was fascinated with rock and roll - Van Halen, Motley Crue, Deep Purple. I would watch their videos when MTV came out and it fascinated me.

"I always just wished I could be a rock star, just for 24 hours to live that dream - the limo rides, the buzz, the hype.

"I can assure you, for those eight hours, 15 minutes and 15 seconds, I was that rock star."

So, if you're keen on breaking this record, you only need to hold it for more than eight hours, 15 minutes and 15 seconds.
