God of War has been dubbed as the 'Big Best Video Game' of all time, according to IGN's recent poll.

A total of 64 games were in the mix, including Grand Theft Auto V, which was beaten in the final by the eventual winners, as per Push Square.

Votes were tallied across IGN's social media sites along with the official website.

On Twitter, 63.2 percent of the 120,390 votes opted for God of War and YouTube held a similar story with 63 percent of 273,000 users choosing the game.

Also, Instagram racked up 57 percent of the votes deciding to go with the PS4 exclusive.

GTA, which finished second, managed to beat classics such as Batman: Arkham City, Super Mario 64, Pokémon Yellow, and Dark Souls.

For those who don't know what God of War is about, well, you must have been living under a virtual gaming rock for the last few years!

The first game came out in 2005 on the PS2 and is an action-adventure game franchise with a total of eight games to its name.

The Gods of God of War have previously been Greek with Kratos, the main character, being a fallen Spartan warrior - something of an antihero, some might say.

The general storyline follows the aftermath of Kratos being tricked into killing his family by a vengeful demigod, who later ascended to being a God himself.

The latest 2018 instalment in the series pivots to the realm of Norse gods - similar to Thor, if that helps at all.

On a storyline level, it also includes an Atreus, the son of Kratos, whom he must show the ropes of being a God - which based on following Kratos around for the previous four iterations of the series, involves beating the living daylights out of people and having a big beard.

In fact, in 2018, critics said it was their favourite game in the entire history of the PS4, racking up a score of 95 on OpenCritic and 94 on Metacritic.

"I have audibly said 'wow' and sighed at the beauty of God of War," wrote Jonathan Dornbush for IGN.

"The texture of grassy hills in the distance feel real, light dances dazzlingly off of shinier surfaces, and every gnarled monster I have fought conveys such a sense of decay as to instil terror in me. Even the sky looks nearly photo-realistic."

The storyline of the last game also pleased critics, as the introduction of Atreus adds another dimension to the already conflicted character of Kratos.

"It's a more thoughtful premise than we've seen from the series, and it allows for narrative possibilities more complex than a deific murder spree," said Steve Watts in Shacknews of the father/son plot.
