Jamie Carragher says Kate Scott 'put him in his place' as he explains infamous on-air dig about her loyalty

Jamie Carragher says Kate Scott 'put him in his place' as he explains infamous on-air dig about her loyalty

Former Liverpool defender Carragher has since apologised for his actions

Months on from an awkward on-air exchange between Jamie Carragher and Kate Scott, the presenter has explained his actions and apologised to his colleague.

The former Liverpool defender-turned-football pundit has spoken about one of the least memorable moments as part of CBS Sports Champions League coverage team.

Alongside the likes of Arsenal legend Thierry Henry and Premier League winner Micah Richards, the team have produced some of the funniest moments in the sport over the past couple of years, though not without their own hiccups.

It looked like, after scoring eight own goals throughout his career, Jamie scored the first in his time as a pundit.

Back in March of this year, during their coverage of the Champions League round of 16 second leg between Arsenal and Porto, Carragher made an odd joke towards Scott that went viral, poking fun at her loyalties to her then-fiancé, boxing trainer Malik Scott.

After refusing to put an Arsenal kit on during a segment post-match due to her 'loyalty' to her club, Manchester United, Jamie 'joked' towards Kate (formerly Abdo): "Loyal to who? Not to Malik!"

It's fair to say that there was a muted reaction from the team, as Kate asked after an awkward laugh from the Liverpudlian: "What? Why would you even say that?"

Social media erupted with criticism towards the 46-year-old, with some even calling for him to get sacked, though he later apologised and was even hit back by Kate during the introduction of the next show, when she called him 'the middle child' of the group with a 'chip on his shoulder'.

But she also highlighted that he apologises, so that must have been water under the bridge, right?

Well, Jamie has recently spoken of the incident again, admitting to The Ringer earlier this week that he was wrong for saying what he said.

He explained: “We never ignore the elephants in the room. I was a little child. I was just getting a little smack and getting put back in place, and rightly so.”

Kate also spoke to the publication, speaking about the ill-timed comment: “I think the reason that we function well is because we needle each other. That's like a sports team, right?

"I feel like those inappropriate conversations should be had in the locker room and kept in the locker room. You deal with them internally, and then you move on.”

Kate is now married to Malik Scott, having tied the knot last month, and also previously admitted that her colleague's joke stung, as it 'came from nowhere'.

Her now-husband responded shortly after the pundit's 'joke', saying: "The only problem I have with things like that is if Kate feels some kind of way about it, she handled it very well."

He added that Jamie can sometimes 'have a runny mouth', but that he didn't take it personally - though if he actually upsets Kate, then the ex-defender will have 'a serious problem', with Malik saying he will 'show up in a physical manner' if he doesn't 'pick up' his call.

Kate has now provided some insight into the response, explaining: “Malik does not want to fight Jamie. Malik and Jamie are cool. I understand why Malik said what he said but I think also if you read the full extent of what he said he was super respectful.”

She added: “He just said, you know, like anybody would say, if anything was said in the future that crossed the line, I'd want to have a conversation man to man. I think that's a normal thing.

“I think the headlines that [said] ‘I'll turn up in physical fashion’ - that was a little overstated. But Malik is so secure as a person. Nothing rattles him.”
