iPhone users finally work out why their alarms haven’t been going off

People think they have cracked the case that has been mystifying iPhone users and making people oversleep.

Saying that your alarm didn't go off is an age old excuse for being late - but it has really been happening to a host of iPhone users.

Although the line might be wearing a bit thin with your boss, it's an issue that has been persisting for a number of months that Apple have apparently not yet resolved.

Loads of us are sick to the back teeth of having to spring out of bed and rush around to get ready after oversleeping, especially after trying every trick under the sun to try and fix the alarm issue.

But we might be able to breathe a sigh of relief, as a string of super sleuths have now come up with an idea about what's causing our alarms to malfunction - despite setting them up like usual on our iPhones.

The problem has predominantly effected the shiny new iPhone 15 models, but other Apple customers with older devices having also complained of the same thing.

Reddit users now think they have discovered the reason why our alarms aren't ringing out at the crack of dawn like they should, after one person shared their early morning experience.

The post read: "Has anyone else had issues with their alarms failing to go off in the morning like this?

"I usually set several sequential alarms. Only my alarm for 6:45am actually sounded and I woke up to find that my earlier alarms had all remained 'set' but failed to sound.

"None of these are recurring alarms, so they shouldn’t 'reset' themselves after going off.

"I also did not snooze any of the first alarms. Is this happening to anyone else? It’s incredibly inconvenient, as the time I actually want to wake up is 6:38am."

The Redditor accompanied the post with a screenshot of several alarms he had set which should have gone off in succession from 6:38am to 6.48am.

Other iPhone users shared their horror stories of their alarms not going off, as well as a nugget of tech knowledge, which could explain the glitch people have been complaining about.

Apparently a new feature came along with iOS 17, which a lot of us didn't pay attention to called 'Attention Aware'.

Apple introduced the new tech element which allows the iPhone's camera to 'check whether you're paying attention to your device and take action automatically'.

For example, if you're looking at your device, the screen won't dim until it clocks you paying attention elsewhere, or it may reduce the volume sound of your notifications and alerts as it knows you're on your phone.

So, the good people of Reddit came to the conclusion that because your phone thinks it is being stared at, it believes that you don't need a loud alarm to wake you up. How wrong are they?!

The good news is, you can simply turn off the 'Attention Aware Features' in your iPhone's settings.

You can find this in both the 'Face ID & Attention' category or by going into 'Accessibility' and clicking on 'Voice Control'.

When you deactivate the features, your phone will no longer think it's being looked at and silence your alarms. Hopefully.

One social media user joked: "We won’t know for sure until we wake up tomorrow."

Another said: "This makes sense. I’ve been up for alarms and I’ve watched my screen light up and show the alarm pop up, but then nothing happens."

A third added: "Funny how in the era of smartphones it seems like a cheap dedicated alarm clock is the most reliable."

People also suggested that switching off 'StandBy Mode' on an iPhone 15 could help remedy the issue.

This allows you to turn your phone into a smart display while it's charging, so it can transform into a bedside clock - how ironic - a photo frame, a display for viewing widgets or Live Activities in full screen.

Some online users moaned that they think this is the source of the disruption to their alarms, so heading into 'Settings', finding the 'StandBy' menu and switching the toggle off.
